Dead Souls
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone take these dreams away
That point me to another day
A duel of personalities
That stretch all true realities

That keep calling me
They keep calling me
Keep on calling me
They keep calling me

Where figures from the past stand tall
And mocking voices ring the halls
Imperialistic house of prayer
Conquistadors who took their share

That keep calling me
They keep calling me
Keep on calling me
They keep calling me

Calling me, calling me
Calling me, calling me

They keep calling me
Keep on calling me

They keep calling me
They keep calling me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joy Division's song "Dead Souls" are open to different interpretations. Some suggest that the lyrics touch upon pain, depression and the struggle to be in the moment. The lines, "Someone take these dreams away/That point me to another day" could signify the feeling of being trapped in a dreamlike state that transport the singer to the future, which he or she is not fully prepared to confront. The mention of "personalities/that stretch all true realities" could represent the struggles with mental health, where reality becomes blurred and the lines between personalities or moods get distorted.

However, another interpretation suggests that the song is an exploration of history and how people are haunted by the ghosts of the past. The lines, "Where figures from the past stand tall/And mocking voices ring the halls/Imperialistic house of prayer/Conquistadors who took their share" represent the presence of the past in the present. The "mocking voices" refer to the critics and dissenters who ridicule the singer's beliefs or actions. The "conquistadors" symbolize oppressive forces that took what was not theirs and left a legacy of pain and suffering. The haunting quality of the melody and the repetition of "they keep calling me" could be a reflection of the futility of escaping the past and its hold on us.

I really like the fact that this explanation is thorough and provides some insight regarding the song's meaning, seen by the line by line meaning. It is true that the listener is open to interpretations, the way that they personally perceive the song, how it might resonate with them on an intimal level. Though, like the majority of songs, there is a "standard definition" , I would say that everyone is open to their own interpretations based on the overall perspective of the listener. Like this analysis,, I have my own respective one. This is by far one of the most "optimistic" meanings granted to the song. Personally, I always correlated the sing with a more pessimistic meaning, but like any other form of art, songs are open to interpretation and thats what makes it all special and awesome.
