Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guess your dreams always end
They don't rise up, just descend
But I don't care anymore
I've lost the will to want more
I'm not afraid not at all
I watch them all as they fall
But I remember when we were young
Those with habits of waste
Their sense of style and good taste
Of making sure you were right
Hey, don't you know you were right?
I'm not afraid anymore
I keep my eyes on the door
But I remember

Tears of sadness for you
More upheaval for you
Reflects a moment in time
A special moment in time
Yeah, we wasted our time
We didn't really have time
But we remember when we were young

And all God's angels beware
And all you judges beware
Sons of chance, take good care
For all the people not there
I'm not afraid anymore
I'm not afraid anymore

I'm not afraid anymore
Oh, I'm not afraid anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Insight" by Joy Division evoke feelings of disillusionment, nostalgia, and acceptance of the fleeting nature of time. The first verse consists of a resigned acceptance that dreams may not always come true, but also the realization that the singer no longer has the desire to chase after them. The repetition of "I'm not afraid not at all" echoes the apathetic tone of the song, perhaps suggesting that the singer has given up on searching for meaning or fulfillment. However, the line "But I remember when we were young" implies that there was a time when things were different, and the singer is nostalgic for that moment in life.

For me this song is like a breath of fresh air after being inside all day

The meaninglessness of life is sometimes overwhelming, we can be caught in the current of passion and eventually we will find meaningless in even our most valuable pleasure.

Sometimes we feel that the feeling that we had as a youth is now meaningless and we can find ourselves "looking for the door" as Ian said

What brings meaning to the chaos is fighting for your passions whether they are meaningless or not, because you are "not afraid anymore" of the dark abyss of meaningless

RIP Ian Curtis, your cynical view of life still give hope to others today

@@rozzer666 I think what he really wanted to say is that you never will face the real world. And for me at least, this is really bad :/. Just my opinion about it.

Words can't express how much I love the visual approach to this video. Unlike all of the other videos that take the easy route of using black and white or have ugly, dull imagery, this one is incredibly lively. A beautiful blend of pop art and abstract imagery. It's so nice to have one of these videos that not only has a narrative but fits perfectly with the song. The idea of escargot having no flavour yet still being called "fine cuisine" just fits the overall motif of mundanity.
My favourite of the lot!
