Novelty
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When people listen to you, don't you know it means a lot?
'Cause you've got to work so hard for everything you've got
Can't rest on your laurels now
Not when you've got none
You'll find yourself in a gutter
Right back where you came from

Someone told me being in the know is the main thing
We all need the security that belonging brings
Can't stand on your own in these times
Against all the odds
You'll just fall behind like all the other sods

You slap our backs and pretend you knew about
All the things that we were gonna do
What ya gonna do, what ya gonna do
When it's over?

You're on your own now, don't you think that it's a shame?
But you're the only one responsible to take the blame
So what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone?
Yeah, what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone?

You slap our backs and pretend you knew about
All the things we were gonna do

What ya gonna do, what ya gonna do
When it's over?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Novelty" by Joy Division appear to be addressed to someone who is successful and powerful. The opening lines question how much it means to them when people listen to them since it seems like they had to work hard to achieve what they have. The next line suggests that they cannot rest on their accomplishments because they haven't achieved anything worth noting yet, and if they do, they'll end up back where they started, in the gutter. The following verse tries to convey the idea that being in the know and belonging provides people with the security they need. But if you stand alone in these times, you'll be against all the odds, and you'll fall behind like all the others.

The chorus shifts the tone a bit, as it suggests that the subject of the song slaps other people's backs, pretends to know about things they are doing, but ultimately will end up forgetting them once the moment passes. Then, it's all on the person by themselves, and they have to take responsibility for their actions. Finally, the chorus repeats the question of "what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone?" as a way of asking what the subject of the song will do when everyone else has moved on from them.

One possible interpretation of this song is that it's about the music business, where people can become successful for a short period, but ultimately their fame will fade, and they will be left alone. The lines about pretending to know things and slapping backs could be talking about the idea of networking and trying to make connections in the industry. The ideas of being alone and having to take responsibility for one's actions could be seen as reminders that ultimately, no matter how successful someone is, they are responsible for themselves.

I feel sorry for those who never discovered this gem of a song.

BIT Arrogant that!
I am 58 in mid March, and an 'original 1977 pUnK rOcKeR ! I Bought the 7" single of Transmission soon after it's release ( I was still at school, so money was tight) I am still into this band so much to this day and have learnt their tunes on guitar!
I am also born and bred in Manchester, but none of these points make me better qualified to comment on this band or any other, be they from Manchester or any other GREAT BRITISH City or town! It is a Gem of a song, I discovered it in 1979, when it was being demoed on 'THE JOHN PEEL SHOW' in 1979! Music is a journey and so it should be! Cheers and Love ! dx

Very similar introduction to Joy Division. My brother was into them in the early eighties he had one of those little tape decks lol. Compared to todays sound systems it must have sounded tinny as f*ck but back then to us it sounded great

@nudibanches

He could have heard it on the B side to Transmission.

It's my favorite song by them, the very first JD song I played when I joined a band in the '80s. I love the guitar parts, so much fun to rock out on stage.
