Twenty Four Hours
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So this is permanent, love's shattered pride
What once was innocence, turned on its side
A cloud hangs over me, marks every move
Deep in the memory, what once was love

Oh, how I realized how I wanted time
Put into perspective, tried so hard to find
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away

Excessive flashpoints, beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out, see what we can find
Valueless collection of hopes and past desires

I never realized the lengths I'd have to go
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know
Just for one moment, I heard somebody call
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all

Now that I've realized how it's all gone wrong
Gotta find some therapy, this treatment takes too long

Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway
Gotta find my destiny before it gets too late

Overall Meaning

"Twenty Four Hours" is a song by the band Joy Division, released in their 1980 album "Closer". The lyrics seem to be about a person who is struggling with the aftermath of a broken relationship. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, describing how love can shatter a person's pride and turn their innocence on its side. The cloud that hangs over the singer of the song is a symbol of the pain and sadness they feel after the relationship has ended. The memory of the love they once shared is deep within them, but it now feels like a distant memory.

In the second verse, the singer is desperately trying to come to terms with what has happened. They try to put things into perspective and find a way forward, but destiny seems to have other plans for them. The excessive flashpoints and solitary demands are a reference to the struggles that come with trying to move on from a broken relationship. The singer knows they need to go on a journey to find themselves again, but all they have to show for it are valueless memories and past desires.

The song takes on a more melancholy tone in the final two verses. The singer realizes just how lost they are and how much they have to do to find themselves again. They reflect on the darkest corners of their mind, the sense of loss and longing they feel. Despite hearing somebody call out to them, the singer knows they are alone and must find their destiny before it is too late.

For me, this is one of the most powerful songs ever written.

It is for sure, Alex.

I agree. Ian Curtis is writing his own epitaph in those lyrics and his genius delivery. It's so sad to think he died at 23. What a talent he was, and could have been.
