Warsaw
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Three, five, zero, one, two, five go!

I was there in the back stage
When the light came around
I grew up like a changeling
To win the first time around
I can see all the weakness
I can pick all the faults
Well, I concede all the faith tests
Just to stick in your throats

Three-one-G
Three-one-G
Three-one-G

Hung around in your soundtrack
To mirror all that you've done
To find the right side of reason
To kill the three lies for one
I can see all the cold facts
I can see through your eyes
All this talk made no contact
No matter how hard we tried

Three-one-G
Three-one-G
Three-one-G

I can still hear the footsteps
I can see only walls
I slid into your man-traps
With no hearing at all
I just see contradiction
Had to give up the fight
Just to live in the past tense
To make believe you were right

Three-one-G
Three-one-G
Three-one-G

Three, five, oh, one, two, five

Overall Meaning

The song "Warsaw" by Joy Division is a powerful and complex composition that explores themes of vulnerability, confrontation, and self-examination. The opening line, "Three, five, zero, one, two, five go!" sets the tone for the rest of the song, creating a sense of urgency that echoes throughout each verse. The singer appears to be recounting a personal struggle, perhaps with a significant other or loved one, where they feel out of place and disconnected, as if they are a "changeling." They almost seem to be at war with themselves, acknowledging their own weaknesses and faults, but still stubbornly clinging to their own beliefs and choices.

The chorus, with its repeated lines of "Three-one-G, Three-one-G, Three-one-G," is both haunting and disorienting. It suggests a sense of repetition or obsession, as if the singer is trapped in a cycle of conflict and doubt. The final verse is particularly poignant, as the imagery of footsteps and walls gives the impression of being trapped or confined. Ultimately, the singer seems to have given up the fight, perhaps in an attempt to move forward and let go of the past.

I really like the fact that this explanation is thorough and provides some insight regarding the song's meaning, seen by the line by line meaning. It is true that the listener is open to interpretations, the way that they personally perceive the song, how it might resonate with them on an intimal level. Though, like the majority of songs, there is a "standard definition" , I would say that everyone is open to their own interpretations based on the overall perspective of the listener. Like this analysis,, I have my own respective one. This is by far one of the most "optimistic" meanings granted to the song. Personally, I always correlated the sing with a more pessimistic meaning, but like any other form of art, songs are open to interpretation and thats what makes it all special and awesome.
