Upa, pra lá e pra cá
Virge, que coisa mais linda!
Upa, neguinho começando a andá
Começando a andá, começando a andá
E já começa a apanhá
Cresce, neguinho e me abraça
Cresce e me ensina a cantá
Mas muito te posso ensiná
Capoeira, posso ensiná
Ziquizira, posso tirá
Valentia, posso emprestá
Mas liberdade só posso esperá
Patá tá tri
Tri tri tri
Trá trá trá
Joyce’s song “Upa Neguinho” is a celebration of new beginnings and growth, particularly in the life of a young black child (“neguinho”). The song begins with the repeated phrase “Upa, neguinho na estrada,” which roughly translates to “Let’s go, little black one on the road.” The use of the word “Upa” is interesting, as it is actually a Portuguese onomatopoeic word for carrying a child, similar to the English “Up” or “Upsy-daisy.” This sets the tone for the song as one of nurturing and support for the child.
Throughout the song, Joyce encourages the child to keep moving forward (“Começando a andá, começando a andá/ E já começa a apanhá”), while also acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead (“Eu vim de tanta desgraça/ Mas muito te posso ensiná”). She speaks of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art with African roots, and the ability to teach it (“Capoeira, posso ensiná”), as well as the power to overcome obstacles (“Ziquizira, posso tirá/Valentia, posso emprestá”). However, she also recognizes that true freedom (“liberdade”) cannot simply be taught, but must be earned and fought for.
Finally, the song ends with a repeating refrain of “Patá tá tri/ Tri tri tri/ Trá trá trá,” which seems to suggest a celebration of the child’s growth and progress. Overall, “Upa Neguinho” is a hopeful and empowering song that celebrates the beauty and potential of black children, while also acknowledging the challenges they face.
