Van Wissem collaborates with Jim Jarmusch and Zola Jesus. He made three records with Jarmusch and played both in Europe and in United States as a duo. He does live scores to silent films, scored several award winning soundtracks and is also acting in film. He makes music which is hypnotic, in a way that is just as challenging as more confrontational music. Van Wissem has been pushing the lute's agenda out of the academy and into more accessible circles (Pitchfork). He has performed over 1000 solo lute shows at concert venues around the world, including prestigious rock festivals like All Tomorrow's Parties and Primavera Sound, playing his all black, one-of-a-kind baroque lute custom build for him. "You do not need to understand [his] compositional idiom to be mesmerised by his hall-of-mirrors instrumentals" (MOJO), "his compositions are mystic and set in hypnotic darkness" (NPR's All Things Considered). Wire Magazine described one of his albums as a masterpiece.

Our Hearts Condemn Us
Jozef van Wissem Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Üşüyorsun ceketimi al.
Günün en güzel saatleri bunlar.
Yanımda kal.
Sana gitme demeyeceğim.
Gene de sen bilirsin.
Yalanlar istiyorsan yalanlar söyleyeyim,
Sana gitme demeyeceğim,
Ama gitme, Lavinia.
Adını gizleyeceğim
Sen de bilme, Lavinia.
These lyrics are from the song Our Hearts Condemn Us by Jozef van Wissem. The song is in Turkish, and the lyrics roughly translate to:
"I won't say don't go.
You're cold, take my coat.
These are the most beautiful hours of the day.
Stay by my side.
I won't say don't go.
But you know what's best.
If you want lies, I'll tell you lies,
But you'll get hurt.
I won't say don't go,
But don't go, Lavinia.
I'll keep your name a secret,
Don't you know, Lavinia."
The song has a mournful, longing tone, as the singer begs Lavinia to stay with him despite the fact that they both know their time together is limited. He is torn between wanting to tell her the truth and knowing that it will hurt her, and wanting to keep her close but also not wanting to reveal too much of himself.
The lyrics are quite poetic, with the singer using the repetition of "sana gitme demeyeceğim" ("I won't say don't go") to emphasize his conflicting emotions. The use of Lavinia's name in the final stanza adds a sense of intimacy and familiarity to the song.
Overall, the lyrics to Our Hearts Condemn Us are a beautiful depiction of the complicated emotions that come with a fleeting but intense relationship.

This is a German D minor tuning 13 course Baroque Lute (18th Century). It was used also as a German Theorbo, but the tuning would be one string different (the first string is a D instead of F, so the last one would be G instead of A.
