Don't Tell Me
Jr Jr Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We may never pass this way again
Just let me enjoy 'till its over
Or forever
Please don't tell me how the story ends
See the way our shadows come together
Softer than your fingers on my skin
That we'll remember
Of each other
Please don't tell me how the story ends
Never's just the echo of forever
Lonesome as the love that might have been
Just let me go on loving and believing
'Till it's over
Please don't tell me how the story ends
Please don't tell me how the story ends
The opening lyrics to Jr Jr's "Don't Tell Me" convey a sense of finality and longing. The singer acknowledges that this could be their last night together and realizes that they may never cross paths again. They ask to savor the moment, to not have it ruined by knowing how their story will end. The second verse deepens this feeling, using imagery like shadows and fingertips to describe the intimacy between them. The singer recognizes that someday, all they will have left of each other is this memory, and asks again to not have the ending revealed.
The chorus is particularly poignant with its metaphorical language. "Never's just the echo of forever" speaks to the idea that memories and emotions can reverberate through time, even if the physical connection is no longer there. The last line of the chorus, "Please don't tell me how the story ends," is repeated for emphasis, emphasizing the singer's desire to live in the moment and not worry about the future.
Overall, the lyrics to "Don't Tell Me" capture the fleeting, bittersweet nature of a last encounter with someone special. The song speaks to the desire to hold onto something beautiful for just a little bit longer, even if it means not knowing how things will ultimately turn out.
