He is one of the most internationally recognized latin artists in decades past. His pop style of merengue and bolero and Afro-pop/Latin fusion have garnered him considerable success outside the Dominican Republic. Juan Luis Guerra is sometimes associated with the popular Dominican music called bachata, and while this association is partially true, he actually uses the basics of Bachata rhythm with a more bolero feel to the melodies in some of his songs.[1] He does not limit himself to one style of music, instead, he incorporates diverse rhythms like merengue, bolero-bachata, balada, salsa, rock and roll, and even gospel as in the song "La Gallera". "Ojalá Que Llueva Café" ("I Wish That It Rains Coffee") is one of his most critically acclaimed self-written and composed pieces. A remix of "La llave de mi corazón" ("The key to my heart") with Taboo from The Black Eyed Peas is also an example of his fusing of different genres.
Estrellitas y Duendes
Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 Lyrics

Como un simple aguacero
De estrellitas y duendes.
Vagaré por tu vientre
Mordiendo cada ilusión.
Vivirás en mis sueños
Como tinta indeleble
No se olvida el idioma
Cuando dos hacen amor.
Me tosté en tus mejillas
Como el sol en la tarde.
Se desgarra mi cuerpo
Y no vivo un segundo
Para decirte que sin ti muero.
Me quedé en tus pupilas mi bien
Ya no cierro los ojos.
Me tiré a los mas hondo
Y me ahogo en los mares
De tu partida, de tu partida.
Andaré sin saberlo
Calzaré de tu cuerpo
Como huellas en hierro
Comeré lo que sobre
Dentro de tu corazón.
Y seré un mar desierto
Una frase silente
La elegida de un beso
Un planeta de celos
Esculpiendo una canción.
Me tosté en tus mejillas
Como el sol en la tarde.
Se desgarra mi cuerpo
Y no vivo un segundo
Para decirte que sin ti muero.
Me quedé en tus pupilas mi bien
Ya no cierro los ojos.
Me tiré a los mas hondo
Y me ahogo en los mares
De tu partida, de tu partida.
Me tosté en tus mejillas
Como el sol en la tarde.
Se desgarra mi cuerpo
Y no vivo un segundo
Para decirte que sin ti muero.
Me quedé en tus pupilas mi bien
Ya no cierro los ojos.
Me tiré a los mas hondo
Y me ahogo en los mares
De tu partida, de tu partida.
In "Estrellitas y Duendes," Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 explores the deep emotions of longing and memory after a romantic separation. The song describes the intense connection and love felt between two people, represented by vivid images such as "estrellitas y duendes" (stars and spirits) and "mordiendo cada ilusión" (biting every illusion). The singer speaks of living in the memory of his/her lover, unable to forget the language of their love even after they have parted. Despite the pain and longing, the singer is resigned to the reality of the situation, expressing a sense of sacrifice and acceptance with lines such as "me desgarra mi cuerpo y no vivo un segundo para decirte que sin ti muero" (my body tears and I don't live a second to tell you that I die without you). The song ends with the image of drowning in "los mares de tu partida" (the seas of your departure), a final poignant glimpse into the depth of the singer's heartache.
