Soulful and melodic, ambitious and intricate, Jubala struggled for years to find their musical identity and to achieve a complete lineup. The diverse group is now whole with the jazz-inspired Trevor Steer on keyboards and saxophone, hard-rocking Zack Singh on bass, and oh-so-funky Derek Staahl on drums and percussion.
In the summer of 2008, Jubala set out to record four years worth of far-reaching material in a four-month period. With the addition of ambitious young friend and producer/engineer Ben Reed, the Jubala team lived and created in their custom-developed studio for months tucked comfortably away from society in the forests of Half Moon Bay, California. Sorting, re-working, and developing new material, Jubala worked relentlessly the length of the summer to meticulously accomplish each task involved with the production of 50+ minutes of handcrafted music.
In October 2008, Jubala’s self-titled release was debuted to the world for the first time through Exolution Entertainment, the band’s manager and former member’s production entity. Jubala’s 13-track musical journey chronicles the perils of self-discovery as the expression shifts fluidly through the realms of alternative and progressive rock. Incorporating soulful and melodic vocals, hard hitting guitars of eras past, and a sensitivity rarely attempted in an age of indie-nonchalance, Jubala has arrived to quench your thirst for something innovative and new.
With an overwhelmingly positive initial reception by Sputnik Music and a powerful group of peers and supporters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and budding new markets around California, Jubala stands poised and ready to dive into live performance: fusing original material with an arsenal of high energy and surprising musical mash-ups that leave the audience wanting to rewind and listen to that part again.

My dreams are just ethereal
Who knows if they'll come true?
What can I do?
What can I do?
Five days since I've seen your face
I'm pent up here in this lonely place
And I'll sit here 'til it's through
It's all I can do
So maybe you'll understand
That you got through my armor
And now you're under my skin
Close to my heart
If you push any harder
I just might fall
I've got this image of you
Planted deeply in my mind
It's what I turn to
When it's getting hard to find my way around
And the world is upside down
You coming through to me
Oh, you don't know what you do to me
And I need you to know
That you got through my armor
Now you're under my skin
Close to my heart
If you push any harder
I might fall
Fall in love
There's a canyon between us
And we're right at the edge
Way at the top
If you come any closer
We might fall
In love
Come a little closer
Come a little closer, baby
Come a little closer
Just a little closer
We might fall
'Cause you got through my armor
And you're under my skin
Close to my heart
Ohh
If you push any harder
We might fall
In love
The lyrics to Jubala's song "Butter" express a sense of vulnerability and introspection as the singer reflects on their life and their feelings for someone they care deeply about. The opening verse begins with the singer admitting that they have nothing material and that their dreams are simply ethereal or intangible. The uncertainty of whether or not their dreams will come true leads them to question what they can do. The second verse reveals that the singer has been lonely and writing a song about the person they care about for five days. Even though they are unable to physically be with this person, writing and thinking of them serves as a consolation.
The chorus speaks directly to this person and the effect they have had on the singer's emotional state. The metaphor of armor and skin symbolizes barriers and vulnerability, respectively. The singer acknowledges that this person has gotten through their armor and is now under their skin. They have become close to their heart and any further pushes could make the singer fall in love. This sentiment is reinforced in the bridge as the singer describes having an image of this person planted deeply in their mind, providing comfort in times when the world feels upside down.
Overall, "Butter" is a raw and emotional song that explores themes of vulnerability, loneliness, and hopefulness in love. The lyrics encourage listeners to be introspective about their own emotions and the barriers they have put up in love.
