How it seemed that we could live forever in a lovers dream?
And falling was the best part but now you know
the things you cling to
Your heart can start to grow.
You, you're walking away.
I've been there now I know what to say I'm the king of
A silly little love song for myself.
It's all I ever do you know I shine the shell.
A pretty little picture, the face of you.
You were my setting sun and now you're every view.
You, you're walking away
I've been there now I know what to say
I'm the king of yesterday.
Why don't, why don't, why don't you stay?
Why don't you stay? why don't you stay? why don't you stay?
Take a little time, throw it on the line.
Let me believe that you believe in me.
Baby turn around, look at what I found.
You are the one that I want.
Take a little time, throw it on the line.
Let me believe that you believe in me.
Baby turn around, look at what I found.
You were the one that I wanted.
And someday I'll be over on my own.
Believing all the legends of the loves I've known
And seeing you in summer the way we were when you were seventeen
You know I much preferred you walking away.
I've been here, now I know what to say
I'm the king of yesterday.
Why don't, why don't, why don't you stay?
Why don't you stay? why don't you stay with me? stay.
You were the one that I wanted.
King of yesterday.
King of yesterday.
The lyrics to Jude's song "King of Yesterday" reflect on a past love and the reflection that comes with the distance of time. The opening lines address the feeling of immortality that often accompanies love in the moment, and the sense of growth that comes from recognizing the things one should let go of. Jude sings of a past relationship that has ended, and the singer is left with the regret of not having said the right thing while he was still with his lover. The listener understands that they have since parted, and while their memory still lingers, it is clear that the singer can see the wisdom of the situation more clearly now, represented by the line "You were my setting sun and now you're every view."
The chorus repeats, "I'm the king of yesterday," suggesting that the singer has become an expert on past mistakes, but only in hindsight. He is left with the nostalgia of someone who has moved on and is now seeing the memory from a removed perspective. The second verse is more direct, acknowledging the characteristics of the former lover that the singer misses. The bridge suggests a chance for reconciliation, though it's uncertain whether or not the other person is still present in the singer's life. The song ends with the affirmation that the love story is over, and life goes on, encapsulated in the phrase, "King of Yesterday."
