I guess I do,
I guess I get by just like you,
I'm keeping to myself though,
If you don't mind,
I don't want to leave any fingerprints,
Movin down the boulevard,
The walk of fame,
Their up against, their trying
To match the hand sizes with the household names,
And I just try to bob and weave,
And keep from bumpin into furry,
Fairy prostitutes, and make it to the corner,
Gonna lose myself inside,
Outside,
Losin,
[Chorus:]
I remember when I first had come to town and you suggested
I kneel and kiss the ground you were such a prophet then to me,
And you, your nothing to me
Nobody wants to help when you start with a please,
To supplicate is not the way,
You gotta put the other man down on his knees,
But that's not why I arrived, no,
That was not the reason,
Don't mind if I retire from a town without one,
Just like a season
[Chorus:]
I remember when I first had come to town, and you suggested,
I kneel and kiss the ground, you were such a prophet then to me
And you, you're nothing to me
Waltzing slowly,
In counter time to your piercing cameras before me,
Moving closer I've come to know that there's nothing in there toshow me,
Pretty good show she said,
I kinda like your style,
Well maybe we could go to bed,
And I can help you run the three minute mile,
But first you got to take the drinks,
You gotta learn to fake the smiles,
She was a piece of pastor primed,
Real estate a late great,
Tip, turn style
[Chorus:]
I remember when I first had come to town and you suggested
I kneel and Kiss the ground,
You were such a prophet then to me,
And you, you're nothing to me
I remember when I first had come to town and you suggested
I kneel and kiss the ground,
You were such a prophet then
The song "Prophet" by Jude is a commentary on the superficiality of Hollywood and the exploitation of young artists. The singer of the song is an up-and-coming star who is trying to navigate the labyrinth of fame and success in this famously unforgiving city. He is constantly bombarded with offers of help from people who don't have his best interests in mind, and he is struggling to maintain his own identity and integrity in the face of such pressure.
In the first verse, Jude sets the scene by describing the singer's journey down Hollywood Boulevard. He is surrounded by strange and exotic characters - the Japanese tourists, the furry fairy prostitutes - and yet he is determined to remain anonymous and invisible. He is trying to keep a low profile, to avoid leaving any fingerprints, but at the same time he is aware of how high the stakes are. Everyone is trying to make it big in Hollywood, and there are so many people willing to do whatever it takes to get there.
The chorus is a powerful statement of defiance against those who would seek to exploit the singer. He remembers when someone told him to kneel and kiss the ground, to show his gratitude for the opportunities he had been given. At the time, he thought this person was a prophet, someone who could guide him through the pitfalls of fame and fortune. But now, he sees this person for what they really are - a false prophet, someone who is only interested in using him for their own gain. The singer is determined to forge his own path, to be true to himself, and to reject the false promises of fame and success.
