Taking More and Giving Less

As he came into the room
The people clapped and they laughed
And they handed him a broom
She said we need a Superman
To clean up all this mess ..
He slowly started taking off her dress
He said I've started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
I leave it to you
To clean up this mess
I've started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
He was living in t he city
He was working with his hands
He was feeling ugly beautiful
So he gathered up a band
And they played for all those Lucifers
And he slapped away their hands
And he said you must confuse me with the rest
I have started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
I'll leave it to you
To clean up my mess
'Cause I've started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
He called her on the telephone
And she said she'd take a plane
He could not stand to be alone and to listen
-to the rain
So she drank up all his secrets
And she kissed a way his pain
Addicting him to something dangerous
He had started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
I'll leave it to you
To clean up my mess
'Cause I've s tarted taking more and giving less
My master now
Is my own happiness
I've started taking more and giving less
Yes yes yes
Yes yes yes
I've started taking more and giving less.
Now he is a captain
In his ship upon the sea
Sailing it to anywhere
That's where he wants to be
And all he ever needed
Was to know he could be free
So where he goes is anybody's guess
He has started taking more and giving less.
The lyrics of Jude's song Taking More and Giving Less are poetic and layered, encompassing a range of themes and emotions. The song is sung from the perspective of a man who is grappling with the idea of love and intimacy, and the sacrifices that he must make to maintain a relationship. Throughout the song, the man struggles with his own fears and insecurities as he navigates the complex world of human relationships.
The song opens with the man stating that he is a lover, not a fighter. However, as he enters the room, he is handed a broom, which suggests that he is not living up to his romantic ideals. The man's lover tells him that he needs to be more like Superman, to clean up the mess that they have made. Ironically, the man starts taking off her dress as she says this, indicating that he is more interested in physical intimacy than emotional connection. The chorus repeats the line "I've started taking more and giving less", emphasizing the man's selfishness and lack of concern for his partner's needs.
The next verse introduces the man's band and their performance for the "Lucifers". The man snaps away at the people in the audience who are trying to touch him, demonstrating that he is defensive and wary of intimacy. He tells the audience that they must be confusing him with the rest, implying that he is different from other men. However, the chorus reiterates that he is still taking more and giving less.
In the final verse, the man calls his lover, who agrees to take a plane to see him. The woman becomes a confidante for the man, listening to his secrets and kissing away his pain. However, the man becomes addicted to this intimate connection, and the relationship becomes imbalanced, with the man taking more and giving less. The outro of the song emphasizes that the man's "master now is [his] own happiness", which suggests that he has ultimately chosen to prioritize his own desires over the needs of others.

Only just found this through your shorts and one of those YouTube rabbit holes late at night. I've just had my second boy (3 months old) and I have a 3nager (you'll find out what one of those is!! LOL). I've been through some hard knocks and some tough licks in life and at 47 (now) I thought I could deal with every situation possible. Then fatherhood came along and it taught me......that I know nothing about everything when it comes to being a Dad !! But that's part of the complete joy of being a Dad. It makes you look deep into those dark holes and locked up boxes in your head and re-examine EVERYTHING.
Your priorities get re-wired and f*cking fast, all those emotional barriers and boundary bricks you've built - they get torn down and demolished pretty sharpish, think you're one tough cookie already? NOPE! You become a raw bundle of emotion again and it all comes flooding out.
And BTW....... I was a big bawling mess of tears after you finished the chorus. Thanks for that! I'm now going to be playing this on repeat....My big little man is probably too young to understand this fully right now, but he's going to hear it, let's hope I can do it the justice it deserves when I sing it to him.
Thank-you for writing this song, from the bottom of my heart and the bottom of the MASSIVE bloody lump in my throat -
THANK-YOU Connor.
EDIT - I'm going to pass one on to you Connor (and anyone that's reading this in the comments) that really resonated with me when my first was born, it's by a guy called Sean Rowe. It's called "I'll Follow Your Trail". I hope you like it as much as I do.

Lyrics:
Mmm, mmm, mmm, yeah
Call my name, I'll be there
Any night and any day
Take my hand, I got you
That'll always stay the same, yeah
Less of my time spent with myself
I wouldn't trade it for anything else
You got my eyes, I got your back
You and me, ain't nothin' better than that
I hope one day that you'll listen to this song
Keepin' us close when I been gone
Every word was written for you, yeah, yeah
When I go, just know I'll come back
If traffic's slow, just know I'd run back to you
I know this world can get kind of cold
Summer comes and it goes
Rain turns into snow and that's the way that it goes, yeah
Call my name, I'll be there
Any night and any day
Take my hand, I got you
That'll always stay the same, yeah
I can't wait 'til you're old enough
When we can sit and have conversations
Tell me all about what you want
From life and all of your aspirations
Show you my favorite movies
I make these songs while you sleep
Every word was written for you, yeah, yeah
When you go, I'll be right here
Pick up the phone, I'll be right there for you
I know this world can get kind of cold, yeah
Summer comes and it goes, yeah
Rain turns into snow, but pain turns into hope, yeah
Call my name, I'll be there
Any night and any day
Take my hand, I got you
That'll always stay the same, yeah
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
