After appearing in Vaudeville theater with her sisters, Judy was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and the film with which she would be most identified, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). After 15 years, Judy was released from the studio but gained renewed success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert, a well-regarded but short-lived television series, and a return to film acting beginning with "A Star Is Born" (1954).
Despite her professional triumphs, Judy battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and overweight. Plied with drugs to control her weight and increase her productivity, Garland endured a decades-long struggle with addiction. Garland was plagued by financial instability, often owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, and her first four of five marriages ended in divorce. She attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Garland died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 47, leaving children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft.
Legacy
Judy Garland's legacy as a performer and a personality has endured long after her death. The American Film Institute named Garland eighth among the "Greatest Female Stars of All Time". She has been the subject of over two dozen biographies since her death, including the well-received "Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir" by her daughter, Lorna Luft. Luft's memoir was later adapted into the multiple award-winning television mini-series, "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows", which won Emmy Awards for two actresses portraying Garland (Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis).
Garland was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. These include "Over the Rainbow," which was ranked as the number one movie song of all time in the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Songs" list. Four more Garland songs are featured on the list: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (#76), "Get Happy" (#61), "The Trolley Song" (#26), and "The Man That Got Away" (#11).
Judy Garland has twice been honored on U.S. postage stamps, in 1989 (as Dorothy) and again in 2006 (as Vicki Lester from A Star Is Born).
A Couple Of Swells
Judy Garland Lyrics

We stop at the best hotels
But we prefer the country
far away from the city smells
We're a couple of sports
The pride of the tennis courts
In June, July and August
The Vanderbilts have asked us up for tea
We don't know how to get there, no sirree
No, sirree
We would drive up the Avenue but we haven't got the price
We would skate up the Avenue but there isn't any ice
We would ride on a bicycle but we haven't got a bike
So we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue
And to walk up the Avenue's what we like
Wall Street bankers are we
With plenty of currency
We'd open up the safe
but we forgot where we put the key
We're the favorite lads
Of girls in the picture ads
We'd like to tell you who we kissed
last night but we can't be cads
The Vanderbilts are waiting at the club
But how are we to get there? that's the rub
That's the rub
We would sail up the Avenue but we haven't got a yacht
We would drive up the Avenue but the horse we had was shot
We would ride on a trolley car but we haven't got the fare
So we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue 'til we're there
"A Couple of Swells" is a charming duet performed by Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in the 1948 movie "Easter Parade." The song describes a pair of cheerful, down-at-heel urbanites who aspire to be a part of high society but can't quite afford it. The song's protagonist attempts to impress the Vanderbilts, but their attempts to get there fail as they don't even have the fare for a trolley or a horse to ride. Instead, they'll walk up the Avenue because it's what they like. In essence, the song is a celebration of the simple pleasures that people can find in the city and their optimistic spirit.
The singers of "A Couple of Swells" are a relatable and hopeful couple who are content with what they have and aspire to have fun, even if they can't keep up with the luxuries and extravagances of high society. They choose to enjoy themselves in their own way, such as walking up the Avenue, rather than feeling shame about their inability to keep up with the Vanderbilts. With the song's upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics, the audience can't help but sing or hum along, regardless of their class or social status, making it an enduring classic.
