Dear Mr. Gable / You Made Me Love You
Judy Garland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our little dream castle with ever dream gone
Is lonely and silent, the shades are all drawn
And my heart is heavy as I gaze upon
A cottage for sale

The lawn we were proud of is waving in hay
Our beautiful garden has withered away
Where we planted roses, the weeds seem to say
A cottage for sale

Through every single window, I see your face
But when I reach the window there's only empty space
The keys in the mailbox the same as before
But no one is waiting for me anymore

The end of my story

Is there on the door
A cottage for sale

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Judy Garland's song Dear Mr. Gable: You Made Me Love You are about a dream castle that is now lonely and silent with drawn curtains, and a heavy heart is gazing upon it. The once proud lawn and beautiful garden has withered away and the weeds now say it is a cottage for sale. The singer sees the face of a loved one in every window, but upon reaching the window they find only empty space. The keys are still in the mailbox but there is no one waiting anymore. The story comes to an end as a cottage for sale appears on the door.

The song was written by two American songwriters, Joseph McCarthy and James Monaco, in 1937. Judy Garland performed the song in the film Broadway Melody of 1938. The song became quite popular and was playing on the radio throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s. The song was one of the biggest hits in Garland's repertoire, and she continued to perform it throughout her career.

The song is considered to be one of the most famous love letters ever written by a fan to a celebrity. The lyrics were inspired by the actress' public declaration of love for Clark Gable, a famous American film actor. Garland was only 16 years old when she appeared in a concert at New York's Paramount Theater in 1938 and performed this song, which was dedicated to Gable. The performance was so stunning that it immediately won the hearts of the audience and the song became a hit.

Interestingly, the chorus of the song was rephrased and became a part of a new hit song "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It)" from the Broadway revue "The Honeymoon Express."

The song was ranked at number 21 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Songs list.

Garland's performance of the song was so impressive that it became one of the few instances in which MGM offered a contract to a performer based solely on one dramatic musical performance.

The song was covered by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne.

Absolute talent and beautiful lady. Too bad the industry had her popping uppers and downers. 🙏 RIP

Why didn't they do this to Streisand? Those two are the most iconic Singer Actresses in 📽️ history! Their duet on Garland's show was awesome! They would have both appeared together again if Garland had lived! Two awesome talents!

Eros Sinema

@Arthur Gearheard Streisand had far more control over her life. unfortunately Judy was her mom's marionette and couldn't get away

The word SUPERSTAR was coined for this lady, from such an early age she was so talented and so beautiful too (Such a shame that Hollywood and bad advice ravaged those looks) Thank heavens that there are still these recordings to remember her by......Even if the sound quality is not that good. R.I.P SUPERSTAR.

Patricia Chernicki

What a performance such emotion and believability.

Eugene Anikienko

She made me love her 😻😂. What can I say? Words don't suffice. I can't find the language to describe the way she makes me feel.
These days are gone forever ♾️, We can no longer produce a talent pure and sweet as Francis Gumm. Thank you Lord for creating her where and when you did. Thank you these things still exist on film! She will live in my heart!
I, too, am a vocalist in the same genre as my dear girl. Therefore I appreciate her gift on a level otherwise unattainable. Thank you Lord.
