After appearing in Vaudeville theater with her sisters, Judy was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and the film with which she would be most identified, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). After 15 years, Judy was released from the studio but gained renewed success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert, a well-regarded but short-lived television series, and a return to film acting beginning with "A Star Is Born" (1954).
Despite her professional triumphs, Judy battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and overweight. Plied with drugs to control her weight and increase her productivity, Garland endured a decades-long struggle with addiction. Garland was plagued by financial instability, often owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, and her first four of five marriages ended in divorce. She attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Garland died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 47, leaving children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft.
Legacy
Judy Garland's legacy as a performer and a personality has endured long after her death. The American Film Institute named Garland eighth among the "Greatest Female Stars of All Time". She has been the subject of over two dozen biographies since her death, including the well-received "Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir" by her daughter, Lorna Luft. Luft's memoir was later adapted into the multiple award-winning television mini-series, "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows", which won Emmy Awards for two actresses portraying Garland (Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis).
Garland was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. These include "Over the Rainbow," which was ranked as the number one movie song of all time in the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Songs" list. Four more Garland songs are featured on the list: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (#76), "Get Happy" (#61), "The Trolley Song" (#26), and "The Man That Got Away" (#11).
Judy Garland has twice been honored on U.S. postage stamps, in 1989 (as Dorothy) and again in 2006 (as Vicki Lester from A Star Is Born).
Everybody Sing
Judy Garland Lyrics

Just learn the words of a simple song,
Of blue skies above,
Be a troubadour and all is love.
When April showers stray
The silver lining will come they say,
And singin' in the rain's the thing
That those happy days again will bring.
So, everybody sing, everybody sing!
Let the sound of your voice turn winter to spring.
Everybody's gay, everybody's gay!
Oh, say can't you hear the orchestra play?
Everybody sing, everybody start!
You can't go wrong with a song in your heart.
Everybody sing, get into the swing,
Get happy, everybody sing.
Yeah, everybody sing, come on now, everybody sing!
Let the sound of your voice turn winter to spring.
Everybody's gay, everybody's gay!
Oh, say can't you hear la-da-de-oo-de-lay-de-lay-o?
Everybody sing, everybody start.
You can't go wrong with a song in your heart.
Everybody sing, come on now get into that swing
Go Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do
Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do
Everybody sing, everybody sing!
Let the sound of your voice turn winter to spring.
Sing before breakfast, help the birdies along.
Before you have your buttered toast, have a song.
Sing before breakfast, never quiet a thing.
Before you eat your shredded wheat, sing, sing, sing!
Sing a song of sixpence, pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds baked into a pie.
When the pie was opened and set before the king,
Four and twenty blackbirds started into sing.
Sing a melody of love, a song will win your lady fair.
Sing a song that mentions love and you will yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi.
Sing a song of cheer again,
The skies above will be clear again,
Those happy days are here again,
Sing a song of cheer again.
If you worry, if you fret, if you're getting deep in debt,
Let your frown turn summerset, get yourself a good quartet.
In the evening by the moonlight
You can hear those darkies singin'.
Sing good, sing bad,
Sing loud, sing soft,
Sing sweet, sing hot,
Sing!
Everybody sing, everybody sing!
Let the sound of your voice turn winter to spring.
Everybody's gay, everybody's gay!
Oh, say can't you hear la-da-de-oo-de-lay-de-lay-o?
Everybody sing, everybody start.
You can't go wrong with a song in your heart
Everybody sing, get into the swing,
Go Do Re Me Fa So La Si Do
Get Happy, get happy
And everybody sing!

As a child I would have thought this was so weird and wondered why they didn’t use a black woman? I would have thought it was mean. It also looks like she’s not enjoying herself either, having to act like a little girl in some respects because what grown black woman wears her hair like that or stands like that or even wears that? I’d be so confused about her age. I don’t think it’s racist, I think it’s hateful and racism and I think they look uncomfortable and foolish even attempting this, however the emotion in the lighter lips against the darker skin, the way it captured a certain quality, if they could please use a black woman and lighten her lips not to such a dramatic degree, but something with being a little used to being dehydrated, I’m not quite sure how to explain it, just no ruby red lips is my point. Like almost dry looking lips that capture the stage lighting… a little bit of white or ash with some sheen… and over draw them just a little bit to show swelling to demonstrate the pain she’s been through… this is not merely a jovial song… She’s not there to kiss someone’s shoes and get her place in line … wowie
So ridiculous… it’s black Dorothy ?
Then use a black woman
As a child I’d be like thank god this over now in my generation
As an adult I notice the awkwardness in all of it and the wrongness
Like how cute and wonderful to see even a little black girl come and sing
Or a teenager
How cute and painful at the same time
I want that
Not this
I do indeed want to vomit a little because I feel tricked and weirded out by this fake person
She looks like she’s under demonic possession
Where is Kevyn Aucoin where you need him? Didn’t he figure out a way around this pathetic thing?
Like he could create the look of a black character and capture a whole personage on a black person with makeup

Judy said later on that she really didn’t want to do it and was very uncomfortable.
Despite this, she sang and performed brilliantly
