Long Ago
Judy Garland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dreary days are over
Life's a four leaf clover
Sessions of depression are through
Every hope I longed for long ago, comes true

Long ago and far away
I dreamed a dream one day
And now that dream is here beside me

Long the skies were overcast
But now the clouds have passed
You're here at last!

Chills run up and down my spine
Aladdin's Lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me

Just one look and then I knew

That all I longed for
Long ago was you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this classic song by Judy Garland are a testament to the transformative power of love and hope. It starts with the line "Dreary days are over, life's a four leaf clover", indicating a change in mood and outlook. The singer is saying that the previous periods of depression and sadness have passed, and life has become brighter.

The second verse indicates that the person singing the song had a dream, and now that dream has come true. It is unclear what the dream was, but the fact that it is now beside the person means that it was a tangible and physical thing. The third verse is a direct reference to the arrival of the person that the singer had been waiting for, "you". The skies have cleared, as if the arrival of the person has brought immense joy that has chased away all the darkness.

The last verse is the most powerful, where the person singing says that they have found the one thing they were longing for long ago - "you". The line "Aladdin's lamp is mine" indicates that the person no longer needs wishes granted because they have found what they were searching for. The song is a testament to the power of love to transform lives, to bring hope to even the darkest moments.

Written for the Rita Hayworth film “Cover Girl” in 1942 by Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern. Judy does this beautiful song such justice. She was born to sing. At 22 years old she still completely conveys the bittersweet wistfulness if this lovely song.

How in the world could a 22 yr old woman sing like this?! She must have been an old soul. May she rest in peace and may everyone who exploited her get what they deserve.
