Once in a Lifetime
Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day, just go along dawn till sundown
Here's a rundown
Every day that comes, comes once in a lifetime

Take each day and gather the rosebuds in it
Fill each minute
Every day that comes, comes once in a lifetime
Think of now, tomorrow is waiting in the wings
Who knows what it brings
While the future waits, the present swings

Day to day, in Brooklyn or China 'cross the bay
Only once comes this particular sky
Only once these precious hours go by
Only once in a lifetime the day comes by
So live, live, live, live today

Think of now, tomorrow is waiting in the wings
Who knows what it brings
While the future waits, the present swings

From day to day, in Brooklyn or China 'cross the bay
Only once comes this particular sky
Only once these precious hours go by

Only once in a lifetime a day comes by
So live, live, live, come on and live today

Sitting there on stage, watching her daughter sing, must've been one of the great joys of Judy's life.

@JM-qe4fm

you could see the mother in Judy when she raised Liza's mic, and told her to stay on key. You can tell they sang at home. It's amazing to watch. Thank you. Tonight was a Judy Garland TV night for me, a marathon!

@abrahamanaya2100

I think it was probably one of the most frightening days for her. A day she saw her daughter as a competitor.

@KM-cu7he

@@abrahamanaya2100 no she was very proud of Liza. By this time they had sung together many times on Judy's television series in the early 60s Judy knew her daughter was going to be a great talent from the time she was a child in the same way that Judy herself was. Judy wanted Liza to have a normal childhood so never put her in anything she did until Liza told her mother she was ready to handle the pressure.

Liza's childhood was far from normal, considering her mother's erratic behavior, trust of all of the wrong people, poor financial management and, basically, leaving Liza to raise her younger siblings when they weren't with their father, it's, frankly, a miracle that she turned out as normal as she did.

@jujulionesselsa1416

My Dad told me everything about Judy and Liza when we were rejected by our Mother, and that was when we were going the worst time in care, ,in a children's home. Through sheer talent via my dad , what the heartfelt magic and talent. I am sorry if I don't I don't make sense. 😊

Judy and Liza were absolutely FABULOUS. The slight edge that Judy will always have no matter who the performer is that every time the viewer feels as if Judy is giving her heart, soul, arm, legs, and everything else. No performer has ever topped Judy in this way and nobody ever will. And obviously her voice is absolutely GREAT.

My god Liza was really something, she was her mother’s daughter and more. Recently watched an interview of her saying her mother realised during this time that Liza was not just good but also competition. Liza took her mother’s torch and held it high. Two legends in their very own right! What a legacy

@tyreebruce

DropTheOscar ASMR Judy did ALWAYS dote on Liza.. one interviewer mistakenly called her LEEza. She corrected it and indeed said she was better. Ah... what talent! If Hollywood had elegance and talent like this again! It’s pure magic isn’t it? This is TRULY a treasure!!

@koileuj5665

I love them both ❤️ and may Judy Garland be in a better place life on Earth was not very nice. The way her mom and the people treated. At stage. God bless Liza and her family sooo talented.
