Anyone who has ever performed knows just how much training and experience are needed to move as fluidly as Mickey and Judy do here, as well as to deliver Lorenz Hart's (very demanding) lyrics with such crisp articulation. It's like Fred Astaire's dances: executed with such grace and command that it all seems utterly effortless. GOD, what talent!

This girl was truly amazing. She had just been taken out of The Barkleys of Broadway where to ill health but manager to rally herself to perform this number. She does amazing things with her hands and arms here and her vocal is great. You would never know she was so ill apart from the thin appearance. The greatest entertainer who ever lived.

However, I wholeheartedly have always believed that Martha Raye was the greatest comedian of them all. Naturally the funniest of them all. She truly should have been a huge star but for some reason she was never appreciated and respected ( as she should have been.) A very good singer and sadly, she is almost forgotten. Check out her movies and watch her on the Judy Garland show.(she is so very outrageous!😱) Give yourself a wonderful treat. You will be so happy!🤗👍😇♥️

I know I've seen this film clip, but it's been at least ten years since last viewing it. Isn't it included in "That's Entertainment"? Anyway, love it, love it, love it!

Yes, it sounds as if Mickey Rooney sings "the double crossing of a pair of eels," but it's not what Larry Hart wrote and thus Rooney throws away one of the cleverest and sexiest puns of the ballad era. The line is "the double crossing of a pair of heels."

I love Rodgers and Hammerstein, but what a difference between the lyrics of Hammerstein and Hart. If this song weren't sung so cheerily, today's PC attitudes might take exception to a lyric that refers to the "blackened eye".

Hey Ted. Well spotted- I noticed this too but wasn’t 100% certain. Here’s what I suspect might be happening- I think Mickey amended the lyric to make it easier to remember and deliver. Sometimes vocalists use memory techniques to remember lyrics better. In this case, eels follows the nautical theme of the verse. Did you notice he also gestures with his middle finger?

@@jimlowell5251 well as a survivor of domestic violence from my stepdad I can confirm that a blackened eye like I had plenty of times due to him punching me in the face is in no way "love." I think its a description of a person who is in an abusive relationship and has difficulty due to the "trauma bond" leaving the abusive relationship. It doesn't have to be the woman who is the victim. Men get abused too. So it's important that the person believing the deception they sing about here gets trauma counseling so they can escape the physically and mentally abusive relationship. I also felt like it could be sung by Ursula the Sea Witch prior to her becoming the Sea Witch and adopting her two pet eels who were always double crossing merfolk. This song describes how she turned into the evil witch she is at the beginning of the movie (she was in an abusive relationship with someone and then she turned evil). I used to call my mom Ursula the Sea Witch since she was violent to me and married a psycho stepdad who constantly tortured me and tried to murder me. At least I have finally escaped. May they both burn in Hell for eternity. Anyway its a helpful song for describing abusive relationships. :)

The Best Part of the Movie! When MGM execs previewed the film, they realized from the audience's reaction that 1 Song wasn't enough. MGM paid her 50K for this scene. MGM had to go back & set up the same scene & Paid Judy another 50K for "Johnny One Note" #. Judy was very thin here but in her next number, she put on a few lbs & looks & sounds great. Also Her dress is also different. In the late 40's Judy & Bette Davis were the only 2 female stars who could carry a film just on their Name alone. '

Mr. Frank was a jerk. He butchered Judy in his first book. If I remember correctly, George Murphy wrote the forward for the book. Mr. Frank showed him a couple of the chapters, George liked what he read, and wrote the forward. Those chapters didn't exist, at least in the book. I Think it was George Murphy. maybe Robert Montgomery?

Just heard the Fitzgerald version. I'm not a Fitzgerald fan and her
version I could use to show why. For one the Bregman's arrangement can't hold a candle to Riddle's: zero degree of inventiveness. I consider
Riddle's arrangement of this song one his masterpieces: much varied and in line with what the lyrics say. And then the singers: Fitzgerald sings all the lines in the same flat way, like she's singing a
tongue-twister. Sinatra imbues every line with meaning: showing that
this song is not simply an ironic song but a sad one, in the end. The same goes for Tormè, who is more subtly rhythmically than Fitzgerald but whom I'd like to ask to if he dug the meaning of the song. This is one of the greatest lyrics ever written to an american song and one should make the effort to get into them, not just use them to do some jazzy groove, like the lyrics weren't there at all.

These two Legends had the Best Chemistry in Hollywood's History. Judy made MGM well Over 50 Million during her 15 yrs there and 50 Million in those days was a huge sum. When those idiots at Metro fired her, they also cut their own throats because it started the downward spiral of MGM. They fired L.B. Mayer shortly after they canned Judy. MGM's musicals were never the same. Im glad in a way because after MGM Judy started her 2nd career which I call "the Concert years"

I believe they fired Judy after they fired Mayer. I wouldn't be surprised if Judy was responsible for Mayers firing. She supposedly threatened L.B. (who had been molesting her for years to STOP, DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN. IF YOU WANT TO SHOW ME WHERE MY HEART IS *JUST POINT*. If you ever touch me again or if I hear about you touching anyone else, I'll, have a nice long talk with the boys in New York. He did, she did, they checked into it, AND THEY DID. BYE LOUIE. He was a molester, and I truly believe she got him.
