Flowers
Jughead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said I do, and I do
But I don't do the dishes and the windows
She said she do, and she done
But she don't turn the fishes into minnows
Can't stop my hands from shakin' ...no ...no

Today's the day, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love
I won't be late, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love

They said we do, and we done
But we won't turn our feathers into pillows
We said we do, and we don't
And we won't turn the tables on our fellows
Can't stop my head from aching ...no ...no

Today's the day, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love
I won't be late, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love

Everytime I turn around, catch you on the fly
When our ships are passing by, sail up to the sky

Today's the day, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love

I won't be late, I'm on my way
I'm bringing flowers to the girl I love

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Jughead's "Flowers" details the different promises that he and his partner made to each other. He says that he promised to do certain household chores like washing dishes and cleaning windows but doesn't do them. On the other hand, his partner promised to turn something into minnows but hasn't done it yet. The verse ends by stating that despite all this, Jughead's hands won't stop shaking, implying that there could be some tension or unease in their relationship.

The second verse is a continuation of the first, where Jughead and his partner have both made promises they haven't kept. This time, they promised not to betray each other but haven't kept that promise. Jughead's head is now aching, and it seems like there's something that's bothering him deeply. However, despite all these issues, he's determined to bring flowers to the girl he loves, and he won't be late.

The chorus of the song reinforces the idea that Jughead is going to bring flowers to his loved one, and he won't let anything stop him. The last part of the song seems to be a shift away from their relationship troubles and more towards something more hopeful. Jughead sings about catching his partner's eye and passing their ships by, indicating that they've both been busy with their own lives, but they're still together.
