Eastwick
Julia Jacklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

it might make for good tv
the grieving process, for all to see
but i don't want my fathers ashes
scattered over strangers couches
and it might make for a fun night in if i
wore a dress and slept with him
but i really hate showing my legs
even when the sydney summer begs me
come on now, your roots are showing
unlike hands, your hair keeps growing
oh now love, you could keep on dying
i think the truth is more age defying
and in the day, when it turned dark
we were just two shelves apart
when we realized
it's not right
you are not in a garden
you are in a store
a single stemmed rose reaching
out for more
did it come as a great shock
when your third love said hey you're not
going to get his heart to beat by
laying offerings at his feet
and in the day when it turned dark
we were two cages apart
when we realized
it's not right
you are not in the wild
you are in a pen
a forgotten sow wondering when

you can
run

Overall Meaning

The song "Eastwick" by Julia Jacklin is a contemplative piece on moving on from unhealthy relationships, societal constraints, and how truth can hurt but ultimately sets one free. The first verse talks about how grief is often glorified in media and how it can be intrusive and violating to have someone's ashes scattered in unknown places. The second half of the verse alludes to the societal conditioning for women to please men and how that can be a struggle with self-image as well.

The chorus is a realization that one is not where they should be and how it can be disheartening to comprehend oneself in a situation where they don't belong. The second verse talks about how one may have tried to change their partner and the reality of the situation but ultimately failed. It touches on the tragedy of continuously trying to force something that naturally doesn't work out, and how one may feel caged in due to their decisions.

The bridge is a call to action, almost like a wake-up call that one must act before it's too late. It's a reminder that time is precious and that one shouldn't wait for someone else to make the right decision. The song ends with a line that summarizes the whole song, which advises the listener not to settle in life and strive for more, to run free like a wild animal.

Overall, "Eastwick" is a powerful and thought-provoking song on the struggles of unhealthy relationships, social conditioning, and finding one's path in life.

The video, to me, is about disconnection. When he talks she doesn't listen. He hugs her with eyes closed while she sips on her drink with eyes open. Travelling is a distraction. They're on a vacation that feels dull, the colors are dull, the room is dull and full of old people watching TV and numbing themselves. She hugs a fan at 1:16. It says "Island breeze". She wants real breeze, real affection but she cannot connect:
"you are not in a garden
you are in a store
a single stemmed rose reaching
out for more"
At 2:12 it's just heartbreaking how they're "two cages appart" and so out of touch.
She breaks the fourth wall at 2:49 for the first and only time in the video while she says the word "run". She looks at the camera. It's like she wakes up and realizes her situation and that's when she "runs". The next scene at 2:52 we see her playing guitar while he talks to her, and it's also the loudest part of the song. It's like she's trying to drown out reality once she had that moment of connection at 2:49. She runs away from it.
At 3:07 she sips on that drink in front of a gas station: anywhere she goes or runs to will taste the same, it looks the same. She's looking once again away from the camera. She's numbing herself again. She could also just be thinking about getting away while she's in this claustrophobic place:
"you are not in the wild
you are in a pen ,
a forgotten sow wondering when
you can
run"
What stands out to me the most is the contrast of the scenery with her bright hawaiian dress and drink and how it all feels like watching the sad reality behind an amazingly fake travelling comercial. Its one of my favorite music videos for sure. Depending on the day I can cry or laugh to it.

I'm not crying at work. That would be weird.

I just really like this line

@honeybrown6953

this is like a mixture of a peaceful quiet bliss and nolstagic sadness that you get on random days, and all you do is zone off into your own little world

Saw her open up for First Aid Kit last week. Wow. What a performer. And just, yes, gives you faith in music and I challenge you not to want to be her friend after seeing her. A lovely presence.
