Michaels wishes she could wipe out Saxe's past dating history and be the only girlfriend he's ever had.
Michaels told Apple Music the song originated with a conversation between her and Saxe while driving. Saxe suggested maybe one day in the future, they'll be able to talk about the people from their past that have shaped their present. Michaels dismissed his comment, claiming she couldn't care less about anyone he's ever dated. Saxe responded, "Well, baby, you can't just live in a world where all my exes are dead."
Michaels retorted by sarcastically singing the first two lines of the song; they decided to go to the studio the next day and write the rest.
"All Your Exes" is the opening track on Michaels' debut album, Not in Chronological Order. Her relationship with Saxe inspired several of the other cuts on the record, including "Lie Like This."
This happiness in love differs from Michaels' previous material where she tended to major on the complications of her romances. "I love that songs like this exist on the new album," she said. "These are songs that explore the upside of being in love as much as the depths of being hurt. It's a new experience for me, and I'm excited for fans to laugh and smile with me."
Michaels and Saxe started their relationship shortly after writing their hit single "If the World Was Ending." They have since written several other songs together, including her "Not in Chronological Order" track "Little Did I Know."
Michaels and Saxe wrote the song with The Monsters & Strangerz production team. The Miami duo produced eight of the ten "Not in Chronological Order" tracks.
All Your Exes

Who you loved is a part of who you are
But that maturity ship sails when I hold you in my arms
There's a spot on your chest just for me, it's personally addressed
And anyone there before me should be a criminal offence
When your friends tell stories about 2017
I know there's parts that they leave out to be considerate of me
And who you write your fucking songs about
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to kill all the memories that you save in your head
Be the only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to live in a world where there's no exes at all
Like you were waiting for me to be the first thing you fall for
The only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
Please don't tell me if I accidentally stumble
Into something that reminds you of her
No, I don't need your previous logistics
Where you spent your last Christmas
Spare your past life specifics, oh
And when your friends tell stories about 2023
I hope they hardly can recall there was a you without a me
Wish I could be blissfully unaware of the history in your couch
And who your songs all used to be about
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to kill all the memories that you save in your head
Be the only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to live in a world where there's no exes at all
Like you were waiting for me to be the first thing you fall for
The only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
Don't tell me to make nice, that I should try to empathize
I'm confident I've got them accurately demonized
You tell me not to worry, I'm the only thing you see
Well, yeah, I fucking better be
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to kill all the memories that you save in your head
Be the only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
I want to live in a world where there's no exes at all
Like you were waiting for me to be the first thing you fall for
The only girl that's ever been in your bed
I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead
In "All Your Exes", Julia Michaels sings about her jealousy and desire to be the only woman in her partner's life. She admits to knowing about his past relationships and experiences, but she wishes she could erase them completely. She doesn't want to hear about his exes or the memories they shared together, and she wants to be the only one he's ever been with.
Michaels highlights the insecurities and irrational thoughts that arise when we're in love. She wants to control everything her partner does and erase any trace of his past, which is an unrealistic expectation. Her description of wanting to live in a world where all his exes are dead is hyperbolic, but it emphasizes her strong desire to be his only love.
The lyrics also touch upon the fear of comparison and feeling inadequate compared to past partners. The line "wish I could be blissfully unaware of where you used to put your mouth" expresses her discomfort with thinking about her partner's previous sexual experiences. Michaels is clear that she wants to be the only woman in her partner's life and doesn't want to compete with his past.
Overall, "All Your Exes" is a relatable song about jealousy and insecurity in relationships. It captures the irrational thoughts and desires that can arise when we're in love and highlights the importance of communication and acceptance in overcoming them.
