Julian Casablancas is half American and half Danish and the son of John Casablancas and Jeanette Christiansen. His parents divorced when he was young. He attended kindergarten with future bandmate Nikolai Fraiture.
Early in his teens, Julian's father sent him to the Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland. This was where Julian first met Albert Hammond Jr. , one of few other American students on campus.
When Casablancas returned to New York, he continued his education at the Dwight School, where he met Fabrizio Moretti and Nick Valensi. Julian later dropped out because he felt like he "just wasn't learning anything" there.
During his hiatus from The Strokes, he released a solo album called "Phrazes for the Young" on the 9th of November in 2009.
To date, the Strokes have released Is This It, Room on Fire, First Impressions of Earth, Angles, Comedown Machine and The New Abnormal.

Man, I love Julian like nobodies business but I just can't fully agree. When The Strokes are in the groove, none of their individual stuff can match up. Not that they aren't all fabulous musicians, but the 5 together create something totally unique-even when they obviously aren't all happy to be there.

Barbara Danley Well, it's funny you say that cos the two most critically acclaimed albums by The Strokes (ITI and ROF) were pretty much 100% conceived by Julian, with the others going along with his ideas. When FIOE came around, the guys wanted more of their ideas involved to the point where Julian couldn't really say no anymore (although FIOE is my personal favourite album).

+Seano299, I think at some point I've heard every member of the band say that they all have firm convictions about how the music should sound, and that recording sessions can get a little tense. That's why each of them have done solo projects, to do something that isn't The Strokes.
However-Julian can write all the songs and music, but he has to rely on the rest of the guys to add their own unique touch to create that signature sound. For example, Nick's legendary solo in The Modern Age-that is all Valensi.

+Seano299 the reason so many people dislike fioe is because they got hooked on the first two albums and just wanted the same sound. I became a fan later and imo, from a critical point of view, first impressions of earth is their best album.
