Recent concert performances have included three further works composed for Julian - Michael Nyman's Double Concerto for Cello and Saxophone on BBC Television, Gavin Bryars' Concerto in Suntory Hall, Tokyo and Philip Glass's Concerto at the Beijing International Festival. Julian’s most recent recording, Phantasia, is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and features violinist, Sarah Chang. This is available on EMI and is the first of several planned recordings that Julian will be making for EMI Classics. His new EMI disc, Unexpected Songs, featuring 21 tracks, including collaborations with harpist Catrin Finch and singer Michael Ball will be released in June this year.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina
Julian Lloyd Webber Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me, all you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you, and hope you love me
Don't cry for me, Argentina
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true
The lyrics of Julian Lloyd Webber's song, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, is a poignant and complex narrative of a woman who is trying to explain to her audience that she still needs their love despite the new path she has taken in life. The woman begins by acknowledging that it won't be easy to explain how she feels, and she is aware that her listeners may find it strange that she still needs their love despite everything that has happened. She explains that even though she is "dressed up to the nines," she is still struggling to feel at ease with those she was once close to.
As the lyrics continue, we learn that the woman has made a conscious decision to choose freedom and try new things. However, she soon discovers that nothing impresses her as she had hoped. Through it all, she maintains her deep love for her audience and pleads with them not to cry for her. She reminds them that fortune and fame are not her driving forces and that her true desire was always to be loved by them. The woman's final plea is for her audience to see that every word she has spoken is true, and she hopes that they will find it in their hearts not to keep their distance from her.
The lyrics to Don't Cry for Me Argentina reflect a deep sense of longing for acceptance and love. Despite taking a new path in life, the woman remains connected to her past and craves the affection of those she left behind. The song speaks to the universal theme of wanting to be loved and accepted, regardless of the choices we make in life. It is a beautiful and emotional song that reminds us of the importance of the people we hold close to our hearts.
