The Last Waltz
Julian Ovenden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The band had only one more song to play
And then I saw you out the corner of my eyes
A little girl alone and so shy
I had the last waltz with you
Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever
Through the good and bad we'd get along
And then the flame of love died in your eye
My heart was broke in two when you said goodbye
I had the last waltz with you
Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever
It's all over now
Nothing left to say
Just my tears and the orchestra playing
La la la la la la la la la la,
La la la la la la la la la la.
I had the last waltz with you
Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever
La la la la la la la la la la
The song "The Last Waltz" by Julian Ovenden tells the story of a couple who had their final dance together. The singer had a decision to make, whether or not to stay and listen to the band's final song or leave. As he looked around, he spotted a young girl standing alone and shy, and he asked her to dance the last waltz with him. The two danced together, and the singer fell in love with the girl. However, they faced their share of ups and downs in their relationship, and eventually, the love they shared died, and the girl left him. The song ends with the singer feeling heartbroken and reminiscing about the time they spent together.
The lyrics are a powerful reminder of how fleeting love can be and how relationships can come to an end, despite how strongly they once burnt. The romanticism of a final dance together and the idea of making it last forever is bittersweet and relatable. The song's slower, ballad-like tempo adds to the emotional impact of the lyrics and creates a haunting and reflective quality.
