My Funny Valentine
Julie Andrews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behold the way our fine feathered friend
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble upright truthful sincere
And slightly dopey gent, you are...

My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable
Yet, you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me

Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of My Funny Valentine are a blend of contradictions. The song is essentially an ode to the imperfect, the flawed, and the unconventional. The opening lines describe a "fine feathered friend" who parades his "virtue"- a thinly veiled reference to someone who is superficially attractive but lacks substance. However, despite the singer's apparent disdain for these qualities, she goes on to describe them in almost loving terms- his "vacant brow, tousled hair" that hides his "noble upright truthful sincere" nature. In a way, the singer seems to be saying that what's on the surface isn't important- what matters is what's inside.

The chorus of the song is a declaration of affection for this "funny" valentine- a person who may not fit the traditional idea of beauty or intelligence, but who nevertheless captures the singer's heart. Her love for him is all-consuming- he makes her "smile with [her] heart," and she sees him as her favorite work of art, despite his un-photographable looks. The final lines of the song reinforce the idea that what's inside is the most important thing- the singer asks her valentine to stay just the way he is, flaws and all, because every day is Valentine's Day when they're together.
