Julie Andrews got her big break when her stepfather introduced her to Val Parnell, whose Moss Empires controlled prominent venues in London. Andrews made her professional solo debut at the London Hippodrome singing the difficult aria "Je Suis Titania" from Mignon as part of a musical revue called "Starlight Roof" on 22 October 1947.
Andrews gained fame at a young age in 1950s Britain by acting and singing on light entertainment radio programmes such as "Educating Archie". She rose to international prominence after starring in Broadway musicals such as My Fair Lady and Camelot, as well as musical films like Mary Poppins (1964) and The Sound of Music (1965).
Andrews had a major revival of her film career in the 2000s, in children's films such as The Princess Diaries (2001), its sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), and the Shrek animated films (2004-2007). In 2005, Andrews made her debut as a stage director with a revival of The Boy Friend, in which she also made her Broadway acting debut in 1954.
She was married with Blake Edwards in 1965 until his death in 2010.
Something Good
Julie Andrews Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Perhaps I had a miserable youth
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past
There must have been a moment of truth
For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth
Or childhood
I must have done something
Something good
In Julie Andrews’ Something Good, the song speaks to the idea of introspection and self-reflection. The lyrics suggest that perhaps the singer has a difficult past and perhaps a wicked childhood, but there must have been a moment of truth in their past, something they did that led them to be worthy of love from someone else. The singer is grateful for the love they have now, knowing that it is something that is not easily earned or gained.
The song touches on the idea that nothing comes from nothing and that somewhere along the way something had to have happened to make them worthy of their current situation. The chorus repeats several times throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of the idea that something must have happened that led them to this place of love.
What’s particularly interesting about this song is how it came about. Something Good was not originally written for the film “The Sound of Music” but was actually a newly written song for the film adaptation, replacing another song “An Ordinary Couple”. Additionally, the song was written specifically for Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the two leads in the film. It actually wasn’t included in the original stage production of “The Sound of Music.”

I am so jealous! I could only dream of meeting such a great lady and my favorite singer (even though she doesn't have the range she once had). She doesn't even have to sing! I just love hearing her voice.
