You Belong to My Heart
Julie London Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to fall in love with all those boys who maul the young cuties
But now I find I'm more inclined to keep my mind on my duties.

While tearing off a game of golf
I may make a play for the caddy
But when I do, I don't follow through
'cause my heart belongs to Daddy.
If I invite a boy some night
To dine on my fine finnan haddie
I just adore his asking for more
But my heart belongs to Daddy

Yes my heart belongs to Daddy
So I simply couldn't be bad
Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
Da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da
So I want to warn you, laddie
Though I know you're perfectly swell
But my heart belongs to Daddy
'cause my Daddy he treats it so well

There was a dame that a football game
Made long for the strong undergraddie
I never dream of making the team
'cause my heart belongs to daddy

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
So I simply couldn't be bad
Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
Da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da
So I want to warn you, laddie
Though I know you're perfectly swell

That my heart belongs to Daddy
'cause my Daddy, he treats it so well

Overall Meaning

The song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" by Julie London is a playful tune with a deeper underlying meaning. The lyrics start by explaining how the singer used to be attracted to boys who were into young and attractive women. However, lately, she has become more focused on her responsibilities and duties. This could be interpreted as a personal growth or a realization that she should not be distracted by frivolous relationships.

The next couple of lines describe the singer's actions on a golf course. Even though she may be attracted to the caddy, she doesn't follow through because her heart "belongs to Daddy." This could be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, it could be a declaration of loyalty to one's father. Secondly, it could be a metaphor for a devoted relationship with a significant other. The following stanza further emphasizes that the singer is devoted to someone else and is not interested in a casual relationship. Even though she enjoys attention from men, her heart belongs to Daddy.

One interesting take on the song could be that it was written in response to the societal expectation of women needing to be married off to wealthy men. The line "my heart belongs to Daddy because my Daddy he treats it so well" could be a nod to the idea that a woman belongs to her father until she is married off to a man who can provide the same level of care and security.

Her voice is so
natural and relaxing, as if she
is not trying to im-
press anyone. She
could be singing
in the laundry room. It's part of
her charm, and
always has been.
I think a more sane, genteel, and
sophisticated
listener is drawn
to her. Can a better tribute be
paid to her?

The melody to this beautiful song was composed by my grandfather in Santa Barbara (Montecito) back in the 1930s. He was quite the pianist and this tune flowed from his mind via his fingers to the keys of his piano. He never made it public. According to my grandmother, their maid was so fond of the tune that she'd hum it while doing her chores. It's believed that someone heard her humming one day and was so impressed that they wrote the notes, chords and eventually put lyrics into place. When the song became popular my grandparents were astonished to realize that a hit had unwittingly been created and he never received the credit. Our family is just thrilled though that it's become such a hit and a much requested song for Mariachis. Julie London does it justice.
