His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.
Le Coeur Trop Grand Pour Moi

Mais je sais qu'elle m'a dit non
Elle était sous le lilas
De sa villa
Ce soir comment te le dire
Bien sûr tu vas me maudire
The first verse of the song Le Coeur Trop Grand Pour Moi by Julien Clerc sets a melancholic tone as he recounts a rejection from someone he had feelings for. He doesn't even know her name, but he remembers the moment she turned him down under the lilacs of her villa. The next verse is directed at someone else, though it's not clear who that someone is. Julien admits that this person will probably hate him for what he's about to say, but he loves them both, regardless. He has a heart that is too big for just one person, and for the person he just mentioned, their name might be Jeanne.
The chorus repeats the refrain, "Oh je t'aime" ("Oh I love you") multiple times, with slight variations each time to reflect the different people he loves. He acknowledges that he's not the type of man who is good with the ladies, and his life has often been filled with loneliness. However, he has a lot of love to give, and it's causing turmoil in his soul. He's trying to navigate these complex emotions, but it's difficult when his heart is so big.
