His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.

Hein, hein, hein
The lyrics of Julien Clerc's song Nouveau Big Bang is a description of a woman walking alone in Paris under the rain. She appears to be of Indian descent, rebellious, and pagan. The woman appears to be looking for an essential answer in the sky, seeking a new universe without cold and winter. The image of the bridge she walks on is significant, representing a connection between the past and the present, and a possible transition to a new beginning.
The lyrics delve into the issues of multiculturalism, challenging the notion of a homogeneous and segregated world. The woman's eyes reflect the intricacies of the modern world, mixing colors and races that coexist in the same space. However, the absence of a star in the Etoile arc represents the loss of a guiding light, a symbol of hope and direction towards a brighter future. The singer dreams of a new Big Bang, a new beginning, a fresh start, a second chance to correct the errors of the past and embrace a more inclusive and harmonious world.
The song's message is clear, calling for a return to a more primitive state, values, and beliefs. The imagery indicates a desire to shed the trappings of civilization, to exchange one's skin for the rough exterior of a wild animal. The artist is calling out to the world to embrace radical change, to challenge the status quo, and to embark on a new and uncertain journey towards a better future.
