ROXANNE
Juliet Simms Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light, oh

I loved you since I knew you
I wouldn't talk down to you
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won't share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up
So put away your makeup
Told you once I won't tell you again
It's a bad way

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

You don't have to put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
You don't have to put on the red light (Roxanne)
Put on the red light (Roxanne)
(Roxanne) (put on the red light)
(Roxanne) put on the red light
(Roxanne) put on the red light
(Roxanne) you don't have to put on the red light

(Roxanne) put on the red light
(Roxanne) yeah, you don't have to put on the red light

Overall Meaning

"Roxanne" is a song about a prostitute named Roxanne who is being urged to leave her profession behind. The verse "you don't have to put on the red light" refers to the red light district where prostitutes would advertise themselves by hanging a red light outside their window. The first verse is directed towards Roxanne where Juliet is compelled to tell her that she doesn't need to sell her body anymore due to the fact that those days are over. She no longer has to "walk the streets for money" and doesn't have to feel the pressure of doing something right or wrong. The chorus serves as a pitch for Roxanne to come with Juliet and to leave her life of selling her body for money behind.

The second verse is directed towards Juliet's love interest, where she tells him that her love for him is genuine and she won't share him with someone else. She also advises him to put away his make-up (a reference to how some men would dress as women at that time) and not fall into Roxanne's trap. Juliet's love for him is so strong that she wants him to stay away from someone who is engaging in the wrong deeds of life.
