A famous description of Juliette Gréco is that her voice "encompasses millions of poems". She was the muse of many of the writers and artists working in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Boris Vian. Some of these artists would write songs for her to sing. She fell in love with and almost married Miles Davis when he visited Paris in 1949.
Juliette Gréco died in September 2020.
Sous le ciel de paris

S'envole une chanson
Hum Hum
Elle est née d'aujourd'hui
Dans le cœur d'un garçon
Sous le ciel de Paris
Marchent des amoureux
Hum Hum
Sur un air fait pour eux
Sous le pont de Bercy
Un philosophe assis
Deux musiciens quelques badauds
Puis les gens par milliers
Sous le ciel de Paris
Jusqu'au soir vont chanter
Hum Hum
L'hymne d'un peuple épris
De sa vieille cité
Près de Notre Dame
Parfois couve un drame
Oui mais à Paname
Tout peut s'arranger
Quelques rayons
Du ciel d'été
L'accordéon
D'un marinier
L'espoir fleurit
Au ciel de Paris
Sous le ciel de Paris
Coule un fleuve joyeux
Hum Hum
Il endort dans la nuit
Les clochards et les gueux
Sous le ciel de Paris
Les oiseaux du Bon Dieu
Hum Hum
Viennent du monde entier
Pour bavarder entre eux
Et le ciel de Paris
A son secret pour lui
Depuis vingt siècles il est épris
De notre Ile Saint Louis
Quand elle lui sourit
Il met son habit bleu
Hum Hum
Quand il pleut sur Paris
C'est qu'il est malheureux
Quand il est trop jaloux
De ses millions d'amants
Hum Hum
Il fait gronder sur nous
Son tonnerre éclatant
Mais le ciel de Paris
N'est pas longtemps cruel
Hum Hum
Pour se faire pardonner
Il offre un arc en ciel
The song "Sous le ciel de Paris" by Juliette Gréco is about the city of Paris and its people. The first verse talks about a song that was born in the heart of a boy and is now flying under the sky of Paris. The second verse is about lovers walking under the sky of Paris and how their happiness is built on an air made for them. The third verse describes a philosopher sitting under the bridge of Bercy, musicians playing, and people passing by. The fourth verse talks about people singing the hymn of their old city of Paris until the evening. The fifth verse mentions Notre Dame and how sometimes there could be a drama, but in Paris, everything can be fixed. The sixth verse is about the happy river flowing under the sky of Paris, and how it puts the beggars and the tramps to sleep. The seventh verse is about the birds of the Good Lord who come from all over the world to chat between them under the sky of Paris. In the last verse, the song talks about the secret of the sky of Paris and how it has been in love with the Isle of Saint Louis for twenty centuries. The sky of Paris is sometimes happy and wears its blue clothes, but when it rains, it's unhappy, and when it's too jealous of its millions of lovers, it roars with its thunder. But the sky of Paris is not cruel for a long time, and it quickly apologizes by offering a rainbow.

If Edwige Feuillère sang French pop songs from the 50's this is how she would have sounded. I love learning French from these great women and their music, films, interviews. How wonderful to have such great instructors.
