I Write B Movies
June Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is about the story that never ends.
But this pen won't run out, but the pages always end up on the floor.

[Chorus]
You like to keep me awake. Is there something that you wanted?
No, don't apologize; just hold your breath.
Try not to freeze before the morning,
â??Cause I am the winter; this sickness will break out.
I am contagious and this illness is what you want.

So I'll stand by your door.
Lay in your bed now, because this is your grave.
Now and burn all your clothes (off) I can tell that your fever is rising.

Why is it so much colder on your side of town?

Would it make things any easier if something comes up and I'm not around?
You can say this is all my fault at the time when you're painting your finger.

Overall Meaning

June's song "I Write B Movies" is a complex ode to the cycle of relationships and the power dynamics that often occur within them. The opening lines, "This is about the story that never ends, but this pen won't run out, but the pages always end up on the floor," introduces the theme of a never-ending narrative that is continuously being written and discarded. The singer bemoans the futility of trying to capture the essence of the relationship, with each page falling short of the mark.

The chorus brings in a new layer to the song, as the singer claims that the other person is purposely keeping them awake. The use of "you" here is ambiguous, and it is unclear whether the singer is talking about their own thoughts or a real, tangible person. However, the repetitive use of "I am" throughout the chorus suggests that the singer is attempting to assert their own power in the relationship, claiming that their sickness and sadness are what the other person wants.

The second verse brings in a dark element, as the singer stands by the other person's door and plans to lay in their bed. The use of the phrase "because this is your grave" is chilling and suggests a desire for control or death. Later, they tell the other person to burn their clothes, implying a desire to destroy all physical evidence of their past relationship.

Throughout the song, June uses vivid imagery and introspective lyrics to craft a complex portrait of a relationship in which there is an ongoing power struggle. The repetition of phrases such as "this sickness will break out" and "I am contagious" creates a sense of unease and discomfort, adding to the overall mysterious tone of the song.
