Daddy
June Christy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, listen to my story 'bout a gal named Daisy Mae
Lazy Daisy Mae
Her disposition is rather sweet and charming
At times alarming, so they say
She has a man who's tall dark handsome, large and strong
To whom she used to sing this song

Hey, Daddy, I want a diamond ring, bracelets, everything
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me
Hey, Daddy, gee, don't I look swell in sables?
Clothes with Paris labels?
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me

Here's *'n'amazing* revelation
With a bit of stimulation
I'd be a great sensation
I'd be your inspiration

Daddy, I want a brand new car, champagne, caviar
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me

Hey, Daddy, I want a diamond ring, bracelets, everything
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me
Hey, Daddy, gee, don't I look swell in sables?
Clothes with Paris labels?
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me

Here's 'n'amazing* revelation
With a bit of stimulation
I'd be a great sensation
I'd be your inspiration

Daddy, I want a brand new car, champagne, caviar

Daddy, Daddy,
You oughta get the best for me , la-dah!

Overall Meaning

The song Daddy by June Christy tells the story of Lazy Daisy Mae and her desires for material possessions. The song starts by introducing Daisy Mae, a sweet and charming girl with an alarming disposition. She has a man in her life who is tall, dark, handsome, large, and strong, and to whom she has sung this song before.

The central theme of the song is her desire for material possessions, which she reminds her Daddy of throughout the song. She requests for a diamond ring, bracelets, clothes with Paris labels, a brand-new car, champagne, and caviar. She wants her Daddy to get the best for her.

The most interesting aspect of the song is the evolution of Daisy Mae's character. She starts as a likable character but slowly transforms into someone who is materialistic, greedy, and selfish. The song can also be seen as a critique of the culture that prioritizes wealth and possessions over morality and values.

June appeared on the songwriter Bobby Troupe's L.A based T.V show and sang this to his piano accompaniment.  They both had such tongue-in-cheek fun with this Troupe song.  It was a joy to watch.  Bringing these videos to life circa 2017 is a joy to me as June's nephew.    I wasn't there when first performed, but can savor her talent all these years later.

Ms. June Christy is one of the finest singers I have in my collection that includes Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dusty Springfield, Anita "O" Day among them.  I lover her tone and her singing/phrasing style.  This song of her's with Stan Kenton is one of the hardest to find on CD.  Am so happy to be able to let someone from Ms. Christy's family know that she still has new fans around!  Adore!
