It Never Entered My Mind
June Christy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I laughed when I heard you saying
That I'd be playing solitaire
Uneasy in my easy chair
It never entered my mind

And once you told me I was mistaken
That I'd awaken with the sun
And ordered orange juice for one
It never entered my mind
You had what I lack, myself

Now I even have to scratch my back myself
Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I'd say a lonely prayer again
And wish that you were there again
To get into my hair again
It never entered my mind

Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I'd say a lonely prayer again
And wish that you were there again

To get into my hair again
It never entered my mind

Overall Meaning

June Christy's "It Never Entered My Mind" is a melancholic ballad about love and loss. The song is sung from the point of view of the person who has lost her lover and now regrets and misses him deeply. The opening lines depict the singer laughing off her lover's warning that she would be alone, playing solitaire in her easy chair. She was once nonchalant about his concern, never giving it a second thought. And yet, as she looks back, she now understands that his warnings were valid, and she is left feeling lonely.

The second verse shows how her lover knew her better than she knew herself. He would awaken with the sun and order orange juice for both of them, but she would never wake up in time. She felt guilty for not being able to be on the same page as him, yet she still ignored his warnings.

The final stanza has a conversational tone and repeats the warnings from the second stanza: "Once you warned me that if you scorned me, I'd say a lonely prayer again and wish that you were there again." There is a sense of acceptance from the singer. She knows that she should have listened to her lover's advice, but it never entered her mind until it was too late. The song is a reflection of the human tendency to ignore the signs that their actions or inactions might lead to heartbreak.
