The song highlights the particular issues of homophobia and racism, and questions why we still struggle with these issues in the modern era. The line "You'd think we've come far enough to put it aside and to quit forcing people in the closet to hide" speaks to the fact that we should have progressed beyond the point of discriminating against and persecuting those who are different from us.
The line "Drop a word about race and you'll cop a black eye, but these mountains of homophobia fly?!" is a poignant observation about the double standards that exist when it comes to the treatment of different groups. LGBTQ+ individuals are simply normal people who wish to live their lives authentically, and there is no valid reason to treat them differently.
