Lonesome Road
Junior Kimbrough Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, hey
Get along, I'm all alone
In my home

Hey, hey
Get along, babe, I'm all alone
In my home
Well, I ain't got nobody
Nobody to keep me company

Hey, hey.
I'm going to leave you alone
I'm going back down
that lonesome road.

Hey, hey.
I'm going to leave you alone
I'm going back down
that lonesome road.

Well, the reason why I'm leavin'
Now baby, now girl, you know
You ain't treating me right

Hey, hey hey baby
mmmhmm, baby.
mmmhmm, baby
What's wrong with you?

Hey, hey, baby
Now, girl don't you hear me calling you

Well, I ain't got nobody
Nobody to keep me company

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Junior Kimbrough's "Lonesome Road" tell the tale of a heartbroken and lonely man who is abandoned by his lover. In the first verse, the singer tells someone to "get along" because he is all alone in his house. He repeats this plea in the second verse, stating that he has no one to keep him company. In the chorus, he affirms that he will leave the person behind and go down the "lonesome road."

The singer then addresses his lover, calling her "baby" and asking her what is wrong with her. He pleads with her to listen to him because he has nobody else to turn to. The final verse brings the story full circle, with the singer lamenting his loneliness and lack of companionship.

The song is a classic example of the blues genre, telling a tale of heartbreak and loneliness with a melancholy melody and sparse instrumentation. Despite its sad subject matter, the song has a certain plaintive beauty that speaks to the human experience of loss and the need for companionship.

Daniel Allan

He uses a lot of finger picking,..picking two strings for octaves, one open string ringing and he finds the octave by fretting on another string. he does this really basic thing around the tenth fret on the E and B strings that can be used on a lot of he stuff!..
