On'n'On
Justice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Before day break there were none
And as it broke there was one
The moon, the sun, it goes on'n'on

The winter better was warm
The summer children were born
And so the story goes on'n'on
Come women if your life beats
Those we buried with the house keys
Smoke and feather where the fields are
Green from here to eternity

Come woman on your own time
Far, far, far from the virgin vine
Rising out from the dead leaves
Come back to me

Oh sing your favorite song
Left to tears
Dreams it goes and then on

A vessel in the bloodline
The 13th zodiac sign
A stitch in time it goes on'n'on

Someday the grapes will be wine
And someday you will be mine
And so the story goes on'n'on

Come women if your life beats
Those we buried with the house keys
Smoke and feather where the fields are
Green from here to eternity

Come woman on your own time
Far, far, far from the virgin vine
Rising out from the dead leaves
Come back to me

Oh sing your favorite song
Left to tears
Dreams it goes and then on

Oh sing your favorite song
Left to tears
Dreams it goes and then on

That which was put in the ground
Will someday come back around
From dust to dust it goes on'n'on

Before daybreak there were none

And as it broke there was one
And still the story goes on'n'on

Overall Meaning

In Justice’s song “On’n’on”, the lyrics speak of the cyclical nature of life, how things come and go, and how nothing ever really ends. The lyrics begin with a reflection on the beginning of time, before daybreak there was nothing, but as soon as it broke, there was one, indicating the birth of the sun. The song then goes on to describe the continuous nature of life, with winters turning into summers, children being born, and the story of life continuing on.

The lyrics then shift to a call for women to come together and celebrate life, not to be held back by social norms or expectations. The “buried with the house keys” line could be interpreted as a reference to the traditional role of women as caretakers of the home, but the singer is urging them to come out into the open, past the old ways. The line “Smoke and feather where the fields are/Green from here to eternity” may refer to the idea of burning a field after the harvest, and the new growth that comes as a result. The singer is urging women to start anew.

The song also references astrology with the line “The 13th zodiac sign”. This line could be interpreted as a reference to the Ophiuchus constellation, which some believe should be the 13th zodiac sign, rather than Scorpio. This further emphasizes the idea of the cyclical nature of life, as well as the idea that there is more to life than what is traditionally accepted.
