I have seen this episode on WEtv, BBCAmerica and even Sundance. Yes, my heart goes out to the victims. Law & Order was entertainment and yet brought voice that would otherwise would not be heard. It's episodes were torn out of real life events and yet were written to be done as fiction. It had topics that affect our society today; some of it people may not like to deal with. At the end of the day, they dealt with it in a manner that could be done "tastefully". This episode was about one particular group of people who did this awful deed; it was not against the entire group of people. NBC just caved in.

My heart goes out to the victims, but as Dick said, it’s based on real life situations. Plus, in life there is no BAN on life situations that can be put into place. At the end of the day it’s entertainment, by that same token, it gives voices to those who would, in some cases, never wise be heard. One of the only shows out there that gets gritty, real, and in your grill with it. Just like most of life’s uncomfortable issues, they need to be seen, heard, and not swept away like last weeks trash.

They caved in to people who are scared to show the harsh realities of mob like behavior towards women in these sort of parades. It wasn't because it depicted a nations parade but what happens in most of these parades. Whether it be st patricks day parade, mardi gras, superbowl, columbus day and many more of these parades. These parades are essential for the economy and rather than have people vigilant they want people to behave as if this doesn't happen just to make sure the economy doesn't get hurt.

Besides it had less to do with race then it did just the whole men vs Women thing. As this happens all the time at large events with some being even notorious about it. I remember watching a documentary about one where guys were following women around with cameras and filming their buttcheeks and upskirts.

I remember the real incident with the Puerto Rican day parade. My Brother and Sister and laws were police officers in NYC. A bunch of men we’re running around and groping women and being offensive. They disappeared into the crowd. The women couldn’t give the cops descriptions, or much more information. Everyone wanted to blame the cops. Even if they had caught the group of men identification and physical proof would have been hard to prove.

Sexual abusers cross all demographics, race, religion, economics. I have seen first hand the blame put on the victim. Even read a case where a ten year old was blamed for seducing a 40+ year old man. Stranger danger is probably the worst thing taught. Over 70% of children under the age of 12 are assaulted by family members or close friends. Children need to be taught to talk to a trusted adult if this happens.
Preferibly instead of prison I would like to see them under the prison.

I do agree that "stranger danger" is not the way to teach children about sexual predators. It wasn't the way my parents taught me to look out for predators. They taught me that ANY touch or speech that makes me uncomfortable should be reported to trusted adults. AND keep reporting it until something is done! Especially if no one believes me and tells me to keep quiet. EVEN IF MY BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND, SPOUSE, SIBLING, CHILD OR PARENT IS MY ABUSER.

I've seen this episode 3 times in syndication. I'll be honest: I get the trauma those survivors are facing and understand if they never want to see it. However, I think many of the Latine organizations were against it because they wanted folks to forget what happened and the fact that it was repeated the following year before it was changed to be more family friendly.

I remember watching the very first Law and Order when it originally aired on NBC. I wasn't much of a TV buff, so I had clue about it, it just happened to come on while I was relaxing. I remembered the intro hinted it was going to be telling a story from two perspectives split into half hours, and after it ended, I thought, that was interesting, this might stay on TV for a few years. Who knew it would become a two- decade phenomenon spurning multiple spin offs?

So I'm an L&O fan. I'm in my mid-50's [aka 'old', aka 'no longer in the target demographic'] and L&O reruns are one of my go-to shows when reality TV and superhero costume shows start to run together like pre-schooler's finger paints.
I'm rather surprised that 'Sundays' is so controversial that NBC pulled it from rotation. In my mind, there were FAR more controversial episodes that could have had that distinction. For example, the guy who murders his wife on 9/11 and dumps her body in the wreckage of the Twin Towers... And I don't recall there being much backlash about the episode in the national media.
But one of the unsung characters of L&O and most of the spinoffs is City of New York itself, the franchise's basic premise is how New York... the police, the justice system, *and the people* ... handle notorious crime. If there was a slew of letters from angry Latinos about the 'Sundays' episode sent to City Hall, then that would have an effect on the show.

@@kershabeaver3312 I actually prefer Criminal Intent over SVU... an awful lot of the SVU cases are difficult to watch and over the years it lost it's sense of humor [Goldberg the wrestler arrested for a Barbie doll fetish in Season One, for example]. And nothing pisses me off like the abuse of children, and that's about every third SVU episode.
As for L&O LA, I didn't think it was gonna go far, but I was willing to give it a chance. I like Alfred Molina as an actor, and Alana de la Garza is gorgeous, so I was willing to give it a second season. Didn't work out, but that's life. The other spins weren't very impressive at all.

Many times, the lines with Munch & Tutuola (Richard Belzer & Ice-T) brought "comic relief" (in at least a somewhat realistic way) to keep episodes from slipping into a state of melancholy. IMHO, SVU needs to develop a larger ensemble of actors so they can bring back synergy to balance that hard-hitting realism.

I love law and order so much! My favourite seasons were 1-10. The backdrop of 90s New York was so awesome, and I love how gritty and realistic the characters were portrayed.

I've only seen the first episode of season 21 but I think it was weak. The series managed to be excellent for all 20 of the original seasons, but the revival starting with season 21 was poor and lost all the charm and good writing of the first 20 seasons.

I think, at the time, it's understandable that NBC chose not to air it again (primarily because they'd lose too many viewers). This was aired about a month ago on ION TV, too. Maybe it's because society is a bit more evolved (not for the NBC network but it seems other networks have picked it up). Of course, just about every episode of SVU, especially when it first came out, was tough. It's interesting what a decade or two will do.

I have a nit with an early statement here. You referred to Law and Order's "novel approach" in covering both the police investigation of a crime, and the prosecution of the case. It is in fact a superficial reworking of the 1963 TV series, Arrest and Trial. This first series used a novel approach. The "Arrest" segment was a 45-minute program covering a crime's investigation and, well, arrest. This was immediately followed by another 45-minute program making up the "Trial" segment. That said, I think Law and Order (and its various spinoffs) was better; I am just saying they weren't the first to do it.

but the difference between A&T and L&O is that A&T went from police (first half) to the defense (second half) whereas L&O went from police (first half)to the Prosecution (second half) which to me made more sense; it told a more complete story.

I've seen this in reruns on several networks. I'm annoyed though that many on cable are censoring episodes that were once on network TV. Put up a warning. I find this perplexing though. I understand fully how someone doesn't want their trauma to be revisited in a work of fiction. That said shouldn't this coalition be more concern with the people who did the groping and bad behavior? I remember when it happened and it was only a fraction of those who came out to celebrate. Why are you mad at a creator from finding inspiration from something that actually happen. Law and Order at one time or another has depicted everyone in a bad light, but it's fiction and is never meant to be a depiction of every group. Art can and should offend, but after in a free society that brings about debate and discussion.

NBC doesn't even air reruns that I'm aware of. As far as I know the main channel that re airs episodes of law and order are we tv and the BBC and both channels have always been airing episodes in order. I mainly watch on we, when I watch reunions, and at one point they were showing all 20 seasons in order from season 1 don't know if they still do it that way or not.

I think the episode should be shown. There should be a disclaimer at the beginning that all ethnic backgrounds are capable of good and bad, and that an episode from true crime doesn't condemn a whole race of people. Nor should we white-wash (and I hate that term) any race. Truth should be our true north. Truth should be shown regardless of who it offends.

This episode still airs. Maybe NBC doesn't have the balls to do it, but it airs on multiple other channels. I JUST watched this episode a month ago on one of ION's channels. lol

wait, u said they stopped airing law and order, but they are going into their 21st year? yea ok that really makes sense. i watch SVU all the time. however very rarely i might see an episode of criminal intent as well. which i liked a little better than SVU, but i still enjoy SVU ALOT

Its similar to the Seinfeld episode The Puerto Rican Day where they PR community was up in arms about the episode. It was added back to syndication after a short time..

Wait, Law & Order is returning for another season? Fantastic. The original show is my favorite. The first few seasons of SVU were good and then it fell off; that tall detective on CI was just plain weird. I never watched the LA series because Law & Order is a NYC show period.

FYI not living in the USA this has been broadcast here several times. I was a little surprised at the topic but I didn't think it was any more offensive than the usual tv stereotypes. I knew L&O often used real events but not that this was one.

Not true. It's in the rerun packages on cable---but I don't blame Looper. It's quite possible there's some ongoing, but quiet, legal dispute that has kept it in the reruns, or there was an oversight when the packages were put together.

I thought that this would be the episode they did right after 9/11. THat still hurts so much. And the actors you could see were really not themselves.
This DOSENT need blocking.
It's called real life.
Abuse DOSENT have colour or race or sex.
