At Least for Now
Justin Bieber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm concerned when you look at my face
You're excited for no reason
I look lost with a drink in my hand
What you think is fair ain't even even
It's cold outside from my expression
Take the scarf and wrap it around my neck
Loosen up my tie
At least for now
Trying to avoid disappointment
At least for now
One finger at a time, I turn the pages, yeah

Right leg crossed while you're smoking a cigarette
Camera's on the couch, ain't nobody taking pictures
Throw my arms around you, bear witness
The stripes on my shirt can you read between the lines
You sip champagne while I sip on red wine
Never mind me watching you, never mind the tension
Please excuse me while I dance, I forgot to mention
I'm going on strike

At least for now
Trying to avoid disappointment
At least for now

Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah
Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah

Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah
At least for now, at least for now, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Justin Bieber's song "At Least for Now" discuss a familiar scenario of a romantic encounter where the two parties have different expectations. The singer is concerned that their partner is excited for "no reason" when they look at their face. They feel lost and out of place with a drink in their hand, and they believe that what their partner thinks is fair is not even. Despite the cold exterior of the singer, their partner wraps a scarf around their neck and loosens their tie.

The singer is trying to avoid "disappointment," but they also seem to be hesitant to fully engage with their partner. They turn the pages of a book "one finger at a time" and watch their partner smoke a cigarette with their leg crossed. The singer seems to be feeling tension and is watching their partner's movements closely, which causes them to forget to mention that they are going on strike. They seem to be taking a step back from the encounter to try to avoid being let down, at least for now.

The lyrics throughout the song highlight the feeling of uncertainty and hesitation that can come with new romantic experiences. The singer is trying to find balance in the situation so that they do not get hurt. They are taking small steps to detach from the experience and protect themselves, such as turning the pages of a book one finger at a time, refusing to be photographed, and going on strike from the interaction.

When I heard this song for the 1st time, I had immediate goose bumps as soon as I heard Justin's voice.
His pure voice lifted my soul up.
As the song went on, my spirit was lifted higher and higher.
As if I could reach the invisible realm.
The realm I'm always looking for in life.
The realm I rarely experience in life.
Justin's resonating voice, the microtones in his melodies, complex rhythm of the melodies, & repetitive synthesizer...
Allowed me to reach there.
At Least For Now
Trying to avoid disappointment.
At Least For Now
I'm living in this song.

I can feel the vibes in this song. Going through depression and anxiety can take over and you feel guilty for the lack of what you can offer others, which makes you that much more disappointed.. when you just want to be the best version of yourself, especially to those you feel really deserve it and have been patient and just more than you deserve (like Hailey). I feel his heart in these words. he is trying to avoid disappointments (such as his illness, career and life changes, mental health) just to keep his head above water so he won't ruin the moment and just enjoy his life. He wants to give himself that, he wants to give Hailey that, He wants to give his fans that. It's hard to give something you feel you don't have in the moment. I am so glad he took the time to take care of himself (or like he says 'at least for now'), because you can't pour out of an empty cup. One day at a time. Love you, Justin.

this is the kind of song on an album you don’t discover for a few months but once you do it shakes you to the core and you can’t stop listening to it. Thanks J for writing this ❤️
