Lonely
Justin Bieber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody knows my name now
But somethin' 'bout it still feels strange
Like lookin' in a mirror, tryna steady yourself
And seein' somebody else
And everything is not the same now
It feels like all our lives have changed
Maybe when I'm older, it'll all calm down
But it's killin' me now

What if you had it all
But nobody to call?
Maybe then, you'd know me
'Cause I've had everything
But no one's listening
And that's just fuckin' lonely

I'm so lonely
Lonely

Everybody knows my past now
Like my house was always made of glass
And maybe that's the price you pay
For the money and fame at an early age
And everybody saw me sick
And it felt like no one gave a shit
They criticized the things I did
As an idiot kid

What if you had it all
But nobody to call?
Maybe then, you'd know me
'Cause I've had everything
But no one's listening
And that's just fuckin' lonely

I'm so lonely
Lonely

I'm so lonely
Lonely

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Justin Bieber's song 'Lonely' talks about the all-consuming feeling of loneliness amidst the fame, money, and success. Despite achieving everything, the singer still feels lonely and misunderstood. He starts by saying that everyone knows his name now, but still, something feels off and different to him. He compares the feeling to looking at himself in the mirror and not recognizing the person he sees. The fame and success brought a lot of changes to his life, but it also made him feel lost and alone. He hopes that things will calm down when he gets older, but it's killing him at the moment.

The chorus of the song further emphasizes the theme of loneliness, where Bieber talks about having it all - fame, money, and success - but still feels lonely when there is nobody to call. He contrasts his present situation with a hypothetical one where he has everything, but nobody knows him. The lyrics highlight the paradoxical nature of fame, where you can be surrounded by people all the time, yet feel utterly alone.

The second verse of the song talks about Bieber's past and how living in the public eye has made him vulnerable to criticism and scrutiny. He says that living in a glass house comes at a price, and he's paid that price by putting up with the constant judgment and scrutiny. The line "And everybody saw me sick," refers to the time when Bieber was at the peak of his success, but also struggling with drug addiction and health issues. Despite this, he felt like nobody cared, and people only criticized him for being an "idiot kid."

Overall, the lyrics of 'Lonely' convey the emotional toll that fame and success can take on an individual, highlighting how even the most successful people can still feel lonely and misunderstood.

Heartbreaking to become a spectator to your own life. A loss of control, a feeling of powerlessness and an unwelcome relegation to the backseat and out of the driver's seat of your own journey.

Thank you for sharing this incredible creation. Hope you find peace

Please don't be fooled. If he really wanted a quiet life out of the media's eye, he could just hide away like many celebrities, it is doable. Why wasn't the Harry Potter cast (who hit fame younger than him) hated by the world? Because they didn't behave like brats and their parents educated them. Like Daniel Radcliffe said "I don’t have Twitter and I don’t have Facebook, and I think that makes things a lot easier because if you go on Twitter and tell everybody what you’re doing moment to moment and then claim you want a private life, then no one is going to take that request seriously.”

So yea, I don't pity celebrities like Bieber who show off their private life to get people's attention, but then cry about their loss of privacy. They chose fame and $$ instead of privacy. It is a conscious decision that they made.

Yeah this song definitely should have won a Grammy. Mellow beat, beautiful voice, smooth flow, relatable lyrics, and a powerful video... checked every box for me.
