Broken Dream
Justin Hayward / Moody Blues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One more illusion shattered, one more broken dream
Oh, that the morning brings the sun
Gone are the days when I could bounce right back again
See how the tears flow down like sweet summer rain
Where does it leave me now?
I find myself so free again

Even the smallest traces of your sweet perfume
Open the floodgates and I'm helpless
Now, as the moonlight shadows, cast across my room
Only the whispered words are heard in the night
Only a silent prayer, I love you still, I always will

Out of the dark, I stumbled into the light
Only my fear has tumbled, I think, I always knew
That I would run to you

Somewhere there's children playing, somewhere far away
Running with open arms to greet me
Over the hill, the sunset dies and fades away

I turn and I close the door with one last goodbye
I will return no more, I'll take my heart and let it fly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Justin Hayward's song Broken Dream speak about the end of a relationship, and the emotional aftermath that follows. The singer speaks about feeling shattered and helpless, having lost an illusion and a dream. The once-bright future that he had imagined has been replaced by tears, and he wonders where he stands now. However, in the midst of this pain, he finds freedom.

The singer reminisces about the scent of his lost love's perfume, and how it still has the power to open the "floodgates" of emotion. He is haunted by memories of the past, and in the stillness of the night, he whispers silent prayers of love. But even as he clings to these memories, he knows that he must move on. He has stumbled out of the darkness and into the light, and he will run towards something new.

The song ends with a note of finality, as the singer takes his heart and lets it fly. He leaves behind the children playing and the fading sunset, closing the door on the past with one last goodbye.

What a beautiful song. Justin is one of the greatest singers, songwriters of all time.

I have listened to this beautiful song many many times. Though I have seen Justin both solo and with the Moodys so many times, I have never seen him play it. It always brings tears to my eyes, as I imagine myself at the burial site of a beloved, giving one last goodbye before turning away. I am so happy to have found this video of him performing this song. As a 17 year old, I met Justin and the other 4 Moodys at the Houston airport in 1972, right as they got off their plane---back before security existed. I had told a few white lies to their concert promoter and they gave me their travel info. I brought the insert liners notes to Threshold of a Dream and Justin rounded up all the boys to autograph it for me. He was so nice and polite, quite unlike most 26 year old superstars. It is wonderful when your hero turns out to be as good as you imagine. Sorry to be so longwinded, but I just love his/their music and the guys.

Not long winded at all and a wonderful story. I didn't get to see them until 1999 even though I'd loved them since the 60s and they were incredible. Always and forever ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธโœŒ๏ธ
