Graceland
Justin Townes Earle Lyrics

Like a National guitar
I am following the river down the highway
Through the cradle of the civil war
I'm going to Graceland, Graceland
In Memphis, Tennessee, I'm going to Graceland
Poor boys and Pilgrims with families
My traveling companion is nine years old
He is the child of my first marriage
But I've reason to believe
We both will be received in Graceland
She comes back to tell me she's gone
As if I didn't know that
As if I didn't know my own bed
As if I'd never noticed
The way she brushed her
Hair from her forehead
And she said losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow
I'm going to Graceland, Graceland
In Memphis, Tennessee, I'm going to Graceland
Poor boys and Pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland
And my traveling companions are
Ghosts and empty sockets
I'm looking at ghosts and empties
But I've reason to believe
We all will be received in Graceland
There is a girl in New York City
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I'm falling, flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
Whoa, so this is what she means
She means we're bouncing into Graceland
And I see losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody feels the wind blow
In Graceland, Graceland
I'm going to Graceland
For reasons I cannot explain
There's some part of me
Wants to see Graceland
And I may be obliged to defend
Every love, every ending
Or maybe there's no obligations now
Maybe I've a reason to believe
We all will be received in Graceland
Woah, in Graceland, Graceland, Graceland
I'm going to Graceland
In Justin Townes Earle's song "Graceland," the lyrics tell a story of nostalgia, loss, and the search for solace. The imagery of the Mississippi Delta shining like a National guitar sets the scene for a journey down the highway, passing through the cradle of the Civil War. The mention of Graceland, located in Memphis, Tennessee, becomes the destination that symbolizes hope, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
The singer's traveling companion is his nine-year-old child from his first marriage, suggesting a personal connection to the song's themes of love, loss, and family dynamics. The line "We both will be received in Graceland" hints at the emotional healing and acceptance that can be found at this iconic place.
The second verse introduces a female character who informs the singer of her departure, as if he hadn't already recognized the signs. The metaphor of losing love being like a window in your heart that everyone can see through emphasizes the raw vulnerability and pain experienced. The repetition of the line "Everybody sees the wind blow" further emphasizes how love's absence is palpable to others.
The third verse introduces the notion of ghosts and empty sockets as the singer's traveling companions. This imagery suggests a sense of loneliness, longing, and the presence of past relationships or memories. Yet, there is still hope for reception and unity within Graceland.
The final verse introduces a girl in New York City who refers to herself as the human trampoline. Her presence represents a sense of escapism and the ability to bounce back from tumultuous experiences. The line "So this is what she means, she means we're bouncing into Graceland" suggests that finding solace in Graceland is akin to bouncing back or finding a sense of joy amidst life's chaos.

Gosh, you really said it.
What you feel, however I say the 2 versions are just different and great not really one better than the other. Like you know Paul has that slightly mischeviouse Wiley short man's singing voice that I like , its kinda fun, while Justin's is nice and a little more sirly and deep .

I can’t get his passing out my head. I’m shocked and will forever miss his tortured talent. I guess we always knew this could be his fate....Thanks for the music you left for us all.
