Start Over
Jutes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were giving it up to the wrong ones
Sacrificing yourself 'cause you want love
Hiding who you really are, yeah
Putting someone else in charge, yeah
You were doing what you thought you had to
Cry alone 'cause you know he's bad news
Hiding every single scar, yeah
Living with a broken heart, yeah

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And we can start over
And we can start over

I was obsessed with doing all the wrong things
Lonely nights is all that it brought me
You would think I loved pain, yeah
'Cause I didn't wanna change, yeah
Different girl every night just to feel again
Give me drugs, get me high, gotta reel it in
Dwelling in self hate, yeah
Till you came my way, yeah

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And we can start over
And we can start over

I know it hurts to end a life
I hope we learn to live this time

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And you can kill the old me, yeah
If you let me kill the old you, yeah
You can act like you don't know me, yeah
And I'll act like I don't know you, yeah

And we can start over
And we can start over

(And we can start over)
(And we can start over)

Overall Meaning

In “Start Over,” Jutes sings about recognizing a need to change and leave past mistakes behind. He acknowledges the pain and unhealthy patterns of behavior that have led him to this point, but also acknowledges that he desires a fresh start. Jutes references his own struggles, but also speaks to the experiences of others who have similarly sacrificed themselves for the sake of love or put others in charge of their lives. He recognizes that moving forward requires mutual effort, as both he and his partner must be willing to let go of their past selves and their negative influences. The chorus serves as a hopeful reminder that a new beginning is possible if both parties are on board.

The first verse is about his partner, who he says was giving herself to the wrong people and sacrificing herself in the name of love. She was hiding who she really was and letting others take charge of her life. The second verse is about Jutes himself, confessing his obsession with unhealthy habits and self-destructive behaviors. He used drugs and one night stands to numb his pain, seemingly enjoying the feeling of sadness. But everything changed when he met this person, who helped him recognize the need for change.
