The City
Juxtaposition Lyrics

And everything was a wash with a pink light
Sunshine or rain, every morning just the same
I kept my face for the front for the whole drive
Out in the night, faces lit up by the fire
As the smoke rises, my mind's feeling fuzzy
Climb to the peak and then we all fell asleep
Feel the chill, feel everything
Everywhere I go
I see the streets that I know
No question where I'll be
Stranger's all around
Feel safe when I can't be found
No direction
Just walking on to that beat
In the city
Hey, in the city
Oh, yeah, yeah
The people that know
You can't just do what your told
They're always searching for something unseen
And when I was lost
Couldn't see past all the fog
It was the hills forgiving me
Everywhere I go
I see the streets that I know
No question where I'll be
Stranger's all around
Feel safe when I can't be found
No direction
Just walking on to that beat
In the city
Hey, in the city
Hey, yeah, city
Oh, oh, oh-oo-oh
City, yeah-e-yeah, hey
Too many times, heartbroken
So I will be (city)
Found loving you
In the city
In the city
The lyrics of Juxtaposition's song The City capture the various emotions that come with living in a bustling urban environment. The singer reminisces about their teenage years and how the daily rhythm of their life felt monotonous but comforting. As the song progresses, they describe the confusion and fogginess that they experience as they venture out into the city at night. They describe losing themselves in the moment as they climb to high points and eventually drift off to sleep. The chorus speaks to the familiarity and comfort that comes with knowing your environment so well that even when surrounded by strangers, they feel at ease. They describe the sense of being lost in the moment and walking along to the rhythm of the city.
The bridge speaks to the idea that there is a pulse to the city that is not visible to the eye, but it is something that can be felt. The people who inhabit the city cannot simply be told what to do because they are searching for something that is elusive. When the singer feels lost in the fog, it is the hills that forgive them and give them clarity, and the city is where they find love.

As far as I see when I was barely fourteen
From a young age, I had a certain perspective on the world
And everything was a wash with a pink light
The world seemed to glow with a special tint, like everything had a rosy hue
Sunshine or rain, every morning just the same
No matter what the weather or circumstances, each day felt monotonous
I kept my face for the front for the whole drive
I maintained a stoic expression throughout the journey
Out in the night, faces lit up by the fire
In the darkness, I could see the light of flames reflecting on people's faces
As the smoke rises, my mind's feeling fuzzy
Watching the smoke ascending seems to cloud my thoughts
Climb to the peak and then we all fell asleep
We reached the summit, but everyone was so tired they passed out immediately
Feel the chill, feel everything
The coldness of the night air heightens my senses
Everywhere I go
No matter where I am
I see the streets that I know
I recognize and am familiar with the roads around me
No question where I'll be
I know exactly where I'm going
Stranger's all around
People I don't know surround me
Feel safe when I can't be found
I feel most secure when I'm hard to locate
No direction
I don't have a set route or plan
Just walking on to that beat
I'm moving to the rhythm of the city
In the city
Amidst city life
The people that know
Those who understand
You can't just do what your told
It's not enough to simply follow commands
They're always searching for something unseen
These people seek out something intangible
And when I was lost
During times when I was unsure
Couldn't see past all the fog
I couldn't see what was ahead, like the path was obstructed
It was the hills forgiving me
Nature, in this case the hills, provided solace and comfort
Too many times, heartbroken
Over and over, feeling let down or disappointed
So I will be (city)
The city will always be there as a source of support
Found loving you
Discovering that I love you
In the city
This realization happened within the confines of the city
