Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."
This band appeared in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Doppelgangland) with the song Virgin State of Mind, leading to a boost in popularity.Their most popular song 'Not an addict' can be heard in the movie 'Wild things'.

Another Year
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The way you did before
Now you're living through another year
Oh, the light you were
Will soon become a blur
As you're living through another year
Oh, what a waste of time it is
To indulge inside of bliss
Another year to lie
Another year goes by
You're not sick, so you can't heal
But I wonder do you feel
The need to cry: 'I'm out of here'
Oh, your goal is safe
But is it all you crave
As you're living through another year
Oh, what a waste of time it is
To indulge inside of bliss
Getting ready for another year like this
Another year to lie
Another year goes by
Is it me who cannot see
The face of mediocrity
I try to smile you see
Your lightness darkens me
Filter all of your emotions.
Fake you're never low
Or face the one you fear
You're living through another year
Another year to lie
Another year goes by
The lyrics of K's Choice's "Another Year" convey a sense of weariness and disillusionment towards the routine of everyday life. The singer wishes that their loved one could go back to the way they were before, expressing feelings of nostalgia towards lost happiness and a recognition of the inevitability of time passing. The verse "Oh, the light you were will soon become a blur, as you're living through another year" emphasizes the idea of the fading of time and the uncertainty of the future. The chorus uses repetition to drive the message home that each year that passes feels like a lie and a waste of time, as the singer questions whether their loved one's goals are worth pursuing.
The second verse takes a more philosophical approach towards the concept of time passing, questioning whether the pursuit of safety and comfort is all that one really desires in life. The line "Is it me who cannot see the face of mediocrity" suggests that the singer is struggling with the routine of their own life, perhaps feeling trapped in a life that is not fulfilling. The bridge of the song advises to "filter all of your emotions" but also acknowledges the impossibility of always being happy and encourages the listener to face their fears and live through another year.
