Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Breakfast

Thought I heard the voice of mammie
Hmm hmm
Sound's as if my parents have a fight
So I woke up my brother lying next to me
Hmm hmm
Better go and check it out
Hmm hmm
So without trying to breath
Only the sound of little feat
We where about to discover what that noise was all about
And as we opened up the door
We saw them lying on the kitchen floor
We where grateful for they both did their best
But we said
"Hey, there must be an easier way to make breakfast"
Hmm hmm
Breakfast
They both got up real fast
As if they where caught or something
Hmmm hmmm
And then we understood at last
It was a surprise-breakfast they where planning
Mamma told as later kids we'll understand
While daddy was busy putting on his pants
We said "we already do, don't worry we'll do the rest
So far for our quest me made coffee, boiled eggs
We made them breakfast
Hmm hmm
Breakfast
The song “Breakfast” by K’s Choice is a beautifully written song that tells a story of a family coming together despite the bumps along the way. The song begins with the singer waking up between dawn and night, thinking she heard her mother’s voice. The next line seems to indicate that her parents are fighting, as she wakes up her brother lying next to her. They wonder why their mother is making all that noise and so they decided to check it out. In the next few lines, there is a sense of tension and nervousness as they entered the kitchen. However, they were surprised to find that their parents had a good reason for the commotion – they were planning a surprise breakfast for the family.
The second verse describes how the parents were caught off-guard when the kids entered the kitchen, but soon they realized that the siblings knew what was happening. The mother explains that they would understand when they were older as the father was putting on his pants. The rest of the verse describes how the siblings took charge and made breakfast for their parents. The song ends with the repeated line, “We made them breakfast.” The song conveys a powerful message about the importance of family and how coming together, even in difficult times, can create beautiful memories.
