Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Elegia
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm sure it was divine
Especially the part where you turned water into wine
Oh, God, I want you to clear my mind
It's covered up with dirt
And I want to taste your skin
One time before I taste the earth
Oh, God, I apologize
I didn't knock when I arrived
Oh, God, I apologize
I didn't say goodbye last night
Oh, God
Now I guess you have your way
As I taste the earth today
Now I guess you have your way
As I taste the earth today
Now I guess you have your way
As I taste the earth today
Now I guess you have your way
As I taste the earth today
In K's Choice's song Elegia, the lyrics express the singer's desire to connect with God despite their doubts and shortcomings. The lines "Oh, God, I haven't read your book / I'm sure it was divine / Especially the part where you turned water into wine" suggest that the singer may not have a deep knowledge or understanding of God's teachings, but still recognizes the power and wonder that God possesses. The mention of turning water into wine alludes to the biblical story of Jesus performing this miracle, highlighting the singer's acknowledgment of God's ability to perform the extraordinary.
The repeated phrase "Oh, God" shows the singer's desperation to reach out to God and clear their mind of the "dirt" that has clouded it. This could be a metaphor for the singer's sins or past mistakes that they wish to leave behind in order to fully embrace God. The desire to "taste [God's] skin / One time before [they] taste the earth" suggests a longing for a deeper connection with God, to experience His presence on a physical level.
The final lines of the song, "Now I guess you have your way / As I taste the earth today," hint at the possibility of the singer having passed away and gone to the afterlife. The phrase "taste the earth" could refer to the singer's experience of death or simply to their return to the physical world after seeking God's presence. In either case, the song conveys a deep yearning for spiritual connection and a willingness to confront one's own mortality in order to achieve it.
