Hallelujah
K's Choice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hallelujah
I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
And she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well, maybe I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live with alone before I knew ya
And he's seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
Says it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
Well remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath you drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
Well it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Halle...
It's not what you're told
It's not her face
It's not his touch
In the room you both share
When he's gone when he left
When your time and your memory fills your dreams
When you're honest and together
Together no more
No more
Hallelujah, until you're nothing
Hallelujah, baby, until she's everywhere

Hallelujah, until together you are somewhere I'd lost
Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

Overall Meaning

K's Choice's song "Hallelujah" is a tribute to the enduring power of love, even when it eventually fades away. The song is based on the biblical story of King David, who is known for playing a secret chord that pleased the Lord. The song begins with the lyrics, "I heard there was a secret chord/That David played and it pleased the Lord/But you don't really care for music, do you?" getting straight to the point. It then goes on to describe a relationship that begins with passion and ends in heartbreak. The lyrics tell the story of a man who falls in love at first sight with a woman he sees bathing on the roof, but later realizes that love is not a simple victory march. The woman cuts his hair and ties him to a chair, yet he still feels compelled to sing out "Hallelujah" despite the pain.

The song's final verses deal with the aftermath of the relationship's end. The singer describes looking back on the relationship with a feeling of sadness, yet still recognizing the power of the love they once shared. The final lines of the song, "Hallelujah, until you're nothing/Hallelujah, baby, until she's everywhere/Hallelujah, until together you are somewhere I'd lost/Hallelujah, Hallelujah," expresses the idea that even when the relationship is over, the love that was once there will still endure.

To those below who deny Leonard loved this version of k.d.’s above all others, you’re both right and wrong. He wasn’t present for this particular show, but she sang it again, one year later at the 2006 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards. We attended the show together and sat in the front row, next to Helen Reddy (another recipient of honors). Leonard and I— and the rest of the audience— were brought to tears by k.d.’s performance, and he whispered to me, “I think we can lay that song to rest now.” I nodded in agreement. He repeated that to her, when she stepped off stage afterward to bow before him directly…it was a gorgeous mutual acknowledgment of musical artistry…and rightly so.

Thank you for this. Of the hundreds of times I've watched this performance in awe ... I've always wondered if KD was nodding to Leonard at the end. I immediately looked up her performance at the 2006 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards after reading your post here ... and cry every time when I watch the interaction of mutual acknowledgment in musical artistry. Many, many thanks. God Bless.

so wonderful to read this, thank you!

He loved Jeff Buckleys version too! All that said, Cohen had the most emotional version.

Same!
I saw her 7 years ago perform this song live and I had tears rolling down my cheeks from the emotion she put into it and simultaneously had goosebumps all over my body. If she comes to Australia again, I will definitely be going again!

Me too! I've never seen this amazing lady in a live performance, but my life is not over yet. Someday...!
