Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Laughing As I Pray
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm crawling
And as I try to live my life again
I'm falling down
Can you pick me up? Can you let it stop?
Can you make it go away?
Can you pick me up? Can you let it stop?
Won't somebody help me, is it hard
To let me find my way?
Won't somebody love me for a start
I'm laughing as I pray
Where is the road?
I must look at the road
I must pray a little longer
Or laugh a little more
The lyrics to K's Choice's song "Laughing As I Pray" express a feeling of desperation and defeat, as the singer describes themselves as crawling and falling down while trying to live their life. They are asking for help, pleading for someone to pick them up and make their problems go away. These lines demonstrate the singer's vulnerability and need for support.
The repeated line "Won't somebody help me, is it hard to let me find my way?" highlights the singer's frustration with feeling lost and alone. They are asking for kindness and love, acknowledging that they need help to start moving forward. The line "I'm laughing as I pray" adds a layer of complexity to the lyrics. It suggests that while the singer is struggling, they are also finding humor in their situation and may be able to find comfort in their faith.
